NEWSLETTER  -  August 2018

Teign School Sessions during the summer  -  The Friday and Saturday sessions will continue uninterrupted through the summer holidays.  As you have continued to support the sessions, we are happy to keep them going.  Friday nights 19.00-22.00 and Saturday mornings 09.00-12.00. The cost of a 3-hour session remains at £2.50 for students and £3.50 for adults, with reductions for families.

South Devon & Torbay League Teams  -  We are at present proposing to enter 11 teams  in the South Devon & Torbay Table Tennis League for the forthcoming season which starts at the end of September.  As teams and players’ availability are not finalised yet, we are still able to slot players interested in playing for the club, into teams and it is still possible to enter further teams if we have enough players.  Entries have to be in to the League by August 17th.   So if you fancy playing League table tennis for Newton Abbot TTC please let me know ASAP and complete the form at the end of this newsletter. There is a small financial commitment for joining Table Tennis England (Adults £16, Juniors £8) and for League registration (Adults £12, Juniors £8), plus match fee of £5/home match.

With League and Cup matches there will be approximately 20 matches in the season Sep – Apr.  All home matches will be played on a Tuesday or Friday night at Teign School 19.00-22.30, whilst away matches could be any night of the week in places such as Dawlish, Brixham & Torquay.  You require 3 players for each match, and I would hope to have teams of 4-5 players to ensure all fixtures can be fulfilled when individual players are unavailable. You may also get an opportunity to play as a reserve for a team in a higher division.

NA Batmen – Shaun Gibbs, Naomi Jackson & Dennis Gibbs, Last season’s top Newton Abbot team finished runners up in the First Division

League Players please renew your Table Tennis England Membership now at:  www.tabletennis365.com/tabletennisengland/membership or by ringing 01908 208898 (after 1st August)

Table Tennis England – As a Premier Club, Table Tennis England would like ALL Newton Abbot TTC players at our club to become members of Table Tennis England. League players are required to be members in order to play competitively in an affiliated League.  However, students and social players not playing in the league are now able to become Associate members, without payment.  The main benefits for the player is insurance cover and regular TTE newsletters, while increased membership helps Table Tennis England obtain funding. I would encourage you to join at the following link:   www.tabletennis365.com/tabletennisengland/membership

Newton Abbot TTC Annual General Meeting (July 13th) – The Chairman, Dennis Gibbs, spoke of the remarkable growth of the club in just a few seasons. Another fine season was reported on by the Secretary, with success on the table, a good increase in membership and a solid financial base. Both Sonja Ryland and Kevin Nicholls were welcomed on to the committee. It was agreed to keep fees at the present level, and to continue to keep the cost of playing table tennis at the club as low as possible.  A discussion on the composition of League teams was discussed at length, with no firm decisions made, as a number of members had not yet confirmed their availability. With several new folk involved, at least one more team was likely.

Club Clothing – Hoodies, Match shirts and T shirts, all individually printed, are still available from our local supplier, Clothing Your Way.  With several new players and teams going to be entered for the new League season, why not get kitted out?  Hoodies £17, Match shirt £12, Performance T shirt £8.50 or all three for £35.  Try on a sample to ensure the correct size and order through Tony.

Don Blatchford Cup - Congratulations to Dylan Bayliss who became the first person to retain the Don Blatchford Cup.  In a top-quality final, he defeated Josh Redfern 3-1.  Dylan won his group and then defeated his brother Rowan in the semi-final.  Josh also won his group, going on to beat Henry Greet in the semi-final. Katie Thain won the shield, defeating Steve Todd in the final.

The Newton Abbot Summer Singles League - With help and support from our National Governing Body, Table Tennis England, who are encouraging Leagues and clubs to trial shorter format leagues and tournaments, the Newton Abbot Summer Singles Tournament was launched.  Originally planned to run over alternate Fridays for 5 sessions, it was expanded to include Saturday mornings as well.  Entry was available to Division 4 standard, non-league, and new players only.  Even with these restrictions a total of 28 players signed up for the Friday night session, and 16 for the Saturday morning session (which we restricted to non-league players only).

With just the final rounds of the two tournaments to go, we have seen some terrific matches and some really close-run games and divisions. The Friday night tournament has seen a different overall winner each week, with the league leader yet to win a session!

The Saturday morning tournament has also seen different winners and is still very close at the top.

Many thanks for your support. A full report with all the winners will be posted in the next Newsletter following the final rounds.

Sonja Ryland (Albany Florists) has also agreed to provide a perpetual trophy for the Friday Night overall league winner - The Albany Florists Summer Singles Cup.  Following its success, this will become an annual event held during the early summer months.

Table Tennis Young Ambassador - In conjunction with Table Tennis England, Newton Abbot Table Tennis Club is offering all 14-25 year olds the chance to become a Young Ambassador for the sport.  This is a volunteer programme, where our young sportsmen and women, who put in the volunteer hours at their local club, not only get recognised as Young Ambassadors, but will also get certificates, branded clothing and receive further opportunities to develop.   Future employers are often looking for youngsters who have made the effort to volunteer in some sector, so it would be a great addition to your CV!

At Newton Abbot we would be looking for a whole range of skills, which could include assisting with:

-  helping new members settle in

-  supporting coaches

-  sparring with new members and beginners, both junior and senior

-  assisting with running tournaments

-  organising competitive play, umpiring, collating scores etc

-  setting up club sessions and packing away

-  writing Facebook / Newsletter articles

-  helping with refreshments

-  collecting session fees and completing registers

-  advising the club on wishes of young volunteers and players to improve their experiences at the club

If you are interested please speak to Tony Halse or email tonyhalse@hotmail.com

Junior Umpire Award – It’s a long time since we last put several of our juniors through the Table Tennis England Junior Umpire Award.  This is aimed at under 14-year olds and consists of a multiple choice question paper and a practical observation of you umpiring 2 games.  If you successfully come through both you will be awarded a Table Tennis England Junior Umpire’s Certificate.  I have some question sheets, so if you are interested then please speak to me (Tony).

Teign School Activity Week – Both Tony and Sonja ran a couple of table tennis sessions at Teign School as part of the school’s Activity Week. Fourteen youngsters of differing standards were put through their paces with prizes and medals awarded to the winners. We are happy to work with the school to promote good working relationships between us.

Newton Abbot TTC Website – Due to the severe limitations of the ‘new’ Clubspark Website which has been trialled by the club for Table Tennis England, we are reverting to the older Table Tennis 365 website for the time being.  So for all the latest news, fixtures and results check out – www.tabletennis365.com/newtonabbot

National League / County - We will again have a team playing in the National League representing Newton Abbot TTC.  Kevin Nicholls and Jon Cheung are managing a team in the Senior British League C4.  Kevin Nicholls is keeping himself busy as he will also be representing Devon Vets alongside our Dennis Gibbs and Sonja Ryland.  Best of luck to both teams for the coming season.

Newton Abbot TTC National League Team – Fraser Kent, Jon Cheung, Kevin Nicholls & Wim Faassen

Non-League Players  -  While a great deal of this newsletter is focused on the new season and players, I would like to assure all those not playing in the League this coming season that the club remains just as committed to you. Providing opportunities for anyone to play and improve is just as important to this club, and if you have any suggestions on improving club nights for those not in the League, please let us know.

A link to this newsletter is sent to all those players who have attended our practice sessions at Teign School in the last few months.  If you do not wish to be included on my circulation list please let me know.  tonyhalse@hotmail.com
