Match Report

As the Sonning B team squad was four players down, the opportunity arose for James Miller to step from the D team and play. In addition Harry and Brett were playing. For Kingfisher was young 11 year old captain Pehej, Peter and Eapen John.

Brett opened up and scored a relatively straightforward win against Peter who was causing some concern with his pimples on his bat. Brett remarked that the bat was similar to that of Huzeyfe! Next was James and Pehej. James won in three games but afterwards felt it was a lot closer than the score suggested. Harry played against the swift moving and hard hitting Eapen. Harry took a game off Eapen but the latter was too strong.

The second round of singles saw Brett take on Pehej. The youngster took the first game off Brett but Brett came back strongly to win in four games. Harry next took on Peter and unfortunately did not manage to overcome Peter having won the first game. The final second round of singles saw James take on Eapen in what was probably the best match of the night. James took the first game, Eapen the second, and then James won the third 13-11 before having match points in the fourth. Eapen drew on his experience to win the fourth game 14-12. In the fifth game Eapen raced into a 5-0 lead before James fought back. The match again looked as if James was going to win as he had match point only for Eapen to win 12-10. A great watch and some great play. So 3 sets all before the doubles.

In the doubles James partnered Brett whilst Peter teamed up with Pehej. James and Brett won the first game 11-9 and eased to victory in 3 games.

The last round of singles. Harry was facing Pehej and in the first game Harry just got home 17-15 thanks to a fortuitous net cord at 16-15! Net cords and edges can be so cruel at times. Harry then managed the next two games to register an important win. James final match was against Peter. Peter played circumspectly but was always in control and concluded his evening with a a win in three games. Last up was Brett and Eapen. Another 5 game set which ebbed and flowed. Brett took the first and third games before Eapen struck back to level in the second and fourth games. Again in the fourth game Brett came very close to victory but Eapen showed great strength and resolution to hang in the match. In game 5, Eapen repeated the scenario of his fifth game with James, by marching into a 5-0 lead! Brett didn’t manage to recover that deficit and Eapen won the game 11-6. Brett stood up well to the quick moving and hard hitting of Eapen.

In conclusion, I am delighted to record the first win of the season and credit to all three players., Brett, Harry and debutant James. For Kingfisher I thought Pehej has a great future in the game. He showed enthusiasm the whole evening and although not winning a match I feel sure he will win a great many if he can cut out the unforced errors on his serve.
