Week 16 Report Winter League 22-23

SDTTL Season 2022-3 Reports: Week 16

Premier Division
At 2-2 Hockley A may have thought they were in with a chance of a shock win over title challengers Thorpe Bay A, but hat tricks from Paul Sayer and John Poysden saw them run away with the next five games to give them a 7-2 win. Start of the run was John's five set win over Ian Wall who fought back from two sets down before losing the decider 11-8. Ian and Matt Stringer got Hockley's points both beating Joe Kennedy but there was no joy for Joerg Poeschus who had stepped up from the C team on the night.

A great close battle as Rawreth B, in the main down to a Keith Adams hattrick, overcame Brand Identity A 5-4. The other two Rawreth wins came for Peter Barrett over David Jacob and Steve Muth, but he was denied his maximum losing out over 4 sets to Simon Jacob.

Not so close a result at Rawreth Lane the next night as Irons A recorded a 9-0 thumping of Rayleigh Mill. Kevin Caldon, John Monk and Dave Bowles sweeping all before them with only one game going the distance as Bowles beat Steve Maltby 11-8 in the 5th.

A very even game to bring things to a close this week as we saw Thorpe Bay B get the better of Rawreth C 6-3. Man of the match was Keith Willett with three wins over Tim Cramphorn, Eric Green and Babul McLeod. Kieran Skeggs also won 3 for the home side to give them the win, but there were lots of close run games on the evening, none more so than the final leg victory for Cramphorn over Richard Stubbington, taking that 5th and deciding set 20-18!!!

Division
Unfortunately, leaders Brand Identity B had a player withdraw during the course of their match away to Canvey A. The overall result went to the home side 5–4, although the visitor’s Barrie Delf once again was Player of the Match, thanks to an unbeaten hat trick. Mike Grout took the other point for his side, whilst Ray Wilson and Lee McGonagle were Canvey’s best players.

Lentern’s 6-3 win away at Mapledene has powered them into second place in the table. Veteran John Tendler recorded a POM unbeaten evening, whilst it was an all-round team performance with Paul Sims adding two and Peter Lucraft one. Dawn Baldry was Mapledene’s star winning a pair, and skipper Andy Seaman got the other point.

Despite only fielding two players, home side Hadleigh Forum B’s years of experience proved too much for their energetic young visitors from Rawreth D. Forum came out 6-3 winners, with both POM Anthon Ranjit-Singh and colleague Dave Woolmer unbeaten.

Another Rawreth side, Rawreth E, got the better of Hockley C, coming out 7-2 home winners. For the visitors, Oliver George was unfortunate not to win all his games, narrowly losing to POM Garry Hartgrove in the last rubber of the evening. Trevor Ward and Colin Clements had two wins apiece.

Daniel Patynski was again Hockley B’s POM in their home match against Stanford Le Hope A. His hattrick, together with two wins each for Stuart Adshead and Dave Colwill, gave Hockley a comfortable 7–2 victory. Peter Weatherall and Saad Abdullah got one each for Stanford.

Division 2
Only three matches played this week in Division 2 but three of the top four teams were in action. Whilst table toppers RESSC took on the up and coming youngsters of Hullbridge, second placed Hadleigh Forum C met third placed Wakering in what could prove to be a crucial promotion clash.

There was one huge age difference in the RESSC – Hullbridge A match and, whilst experience won the day, the youngsters provided plenty more evidence of how good they are going to be. Bob Skews saw the leaders home with a hat trick, Mike Worship won two and Ron Coutts won one in the 6-3 victory but there two big wins for Evie Knaapen against Ron and Mike and one for Jack Riley also against Ron. Evie showed plenty of fight against Mike coming back from two sets down before clinching the match 12/10 in the fifth. Lotte Mills made up the Hullbridge team but had no joy on the night.

Third placed Wakering were five points behind Hadleigh Forum C with a game in hand prior to their match but a convincing 7-2 win for the away side, now sees them ten points clear, albeit Wakering still have the game in hand. Despite an opening five set win for Zac England over Tony Mace in the first game of the evening things went downhill for Wakering after that losing the next six games before Paul England repeated his son’s success over Tony. It was Graham Farmer and Mark Everard who did the damage for Hadleigh chalking up three wins apiece which meant Stewart Mills of Wakering had a winless night. There are still enough games for Wakering to make up the deficit but it’s going to be hard.

Last game of the week was dealing more with the bottom end of the table as Selbourne slumped to their eight defeat on the trot losing 9-0 to Runnymede and staying one but bottom of the league. With bottom team Rawreth having no less than four games in hand things look pretty bleak for the Selbourne side. Dmitry Kisil, Andrew Humphris and Steve Wisbey did the damage with Dmitry taking the POTM award. Andy Roff came closest to getting a consolation point for Selbourne going down in five sets to Steve after leading 2-1.

Division 3
Two of the Division 3 title contenders met at the start of the week, and it was Invicta B who ran out 7/3 winners over MegaZone.  Steve Lennox was the stand out player for Invicta with a hat-trick and he was ably supported by Keith Baxter and Michael Keeble who both picked up two wins.  Jonathan Allen with the two points for MegaZone.

Stanford C were in fine form in their match against Hockley E.  Their 8-1 victory included maximums for Vaughan Chambers and, player of the match, Peter Moxham.  David Arnett chipped in with two wins but went down in 4 sets against Alwine Jarvis.

An unbeaten performance from Trisha Winter proved to be of no avail as her Invicta ‘C’ team went down 6-3 to Hullbridge B for whom Dan Stewart, Max Mayo and Ben Murray all recorded two wins.  The best game of the night saw Max Mayo recover from the loss of the first 2 sets to overcome Brendan Raja 5-11, 8-11, 12-10, 11-8, 11-8.

Hockley D have led the table all season and they maintained this position with an 8-1 success over the young Rawreth G side.  Only Aaron Price could make any impression when he beat John George in the final game of the match.  The consistent Jeremy Giffin and Ron Rogerson recorded maximums with John adding the other two points.

Finally, it was 2 a-side when Hadleigh Forum D met Canvey C with neither side able to field a full complement.  The outcome was a 6-2 win for Canvey with Trevor Hayes and Stephen Parker each recording wins over the Forum pair of Dean Johnson and Todd Barker.  This defeat leaves Forum dangerously close to the foot of the table, only 8 points ahead of Rawreth ‘G’ who have played 2 games less.
