Week 11 Report Winter League 21-22

Sdttl Winter League 2021-2 Week 11

Premier Division

At time of writing, we have three results from the Premier division to report back on from week 11. The closest of the matches was the Irons derby as Irons B just pipped their Irons A side in a 5-4 victory. A few notable wins within that match as we saw, for Irons A, good wins for Dave Bowles over Norbert Fullerton and Richard Brown over Keith Adams and for the B team a great win for their captain Paul ‘Risky’ Brown as he defeated Stuart Gibbs.

The other two results this week were 6-3 victories for Hullbridge A and Brand Identity AHullbridge A’s win notable as it came against Thorpe Bay A and I can’t recall when they last lost a game. Hullbridge were aided by the fact that Thorpe Bay could only field two players, Paul Whatton and Paul Sayer. Liam Squirrel was in fine form and beat both Pauls with the additional point for Hullbridge coming from an excellent win for Joseph Buscombe over Paul Whatton.  Hullbridge’s third player Arron Chandler can come away feeling unlucky not to register a win as he went down close in 5 sets to both Whatton and Sayer.

The third and final game saw Brand Identity A overcome Thorpe Bay B 6-3. Simon and his brother David Jacob and Richard Jackman all posting victories over Rich Stubbington and Keith Willett, but it was Kieran Skeggs who took the man of the match award by beating all three Brand Identity players and only dropping on set along the way.

One of the two remaining unbeaten records was sunk this week when Brand Identity B paid a visit to Stanford Le Hope A. The home side were for once at full strength and called upon some of their big guns. No one player was unbeaten in the 5 – 4 home win that saw several close contests. Barrie Delf was mathematically POM for his two victories, but lost out to Derrick Pearson. Derrick also had two wins, losing out to Jenny Harrison, and his team mate Russell Bright also won two, but lost to Barrie. There were single successes for Dave and the visitors’ Jenny and Adam Jackman.

Hockley B now remain the only unbeaten team in this division and their new find, Andrew Cunningham, was again unstoppable in Hockley’s 6 – 3 home success over Hadleigh Forum B. Andy’s hat trick ensured he maintained his 100% average and also gave him the POM award. Stuart Adshead added two more for Hockley, with Keith Abbott adding a further success. Mick Tappenden was Forum’s best player winning two, with David Woolmer contributing the other win.

In a contest peppered with long rallies, and many close scores, Invicta A surprisingly overcame visitors Hockley C 7 – 2. League positions indicated a much closer contest. Alan Strawford took all the plaudits for Invicta with a maximum, whilst Tony Ayliffe and David Barnes chipped in with two apiece. Joerg Poeschus won one for the visitors, whilst Paul Strutt won the unique coming together of two Divisional Results Secretaries, getting the better of David by 3 games to 1.

Chris Aukett will again be disappointed that, despite his Player of the Match hat trick, his Rawreth C team went down 5 – 4 to visitors Mapledene. Bill Smith and Lin Roff each won two and Charles Yeung added another for the visitors. Justin Jeffrey’s single success completed the home side’s scoring.

Keanan Ford managed to save Ashingdon’s blushes with his side’s 8 – 1 home defeat to Lentern B. Paul sims and Wayne Farmer were unbeaten for the visitors and Peter Lucraft added two.

The match between Hadleigh Forum C and Rawreth D was postponed.

Division 2

Runnymede have moved to top spot in Division 2 by three points albeit the second and third placed teams RESSC and Wakering, both have a game in hand.

Runnymede had little difficulty in despatching Invicta C 8-1 with Tony Millward taking the POTM honours not losing a set all night. Steve Wisbey also completed his hat trick although he was taken to five sets by Trisha Winter who led 2-1 at one stage. Keith Baxter salvaged the point for Invicta beating Jim Nariel in four sets.

Closest match of the week turned out to be Invicta B’s 6-3 win against Hadleigh Forum D but that was only due to the efforts of Hadleigh’s Tony Mace who won all his games without losing a set. The Invicta side of Mike Keeble, Sarah Ball and Steve Lennox move up to 7th in the table as a result.

Customs still await their first win of the season after going down 7-2 to Stanford C. Mark Farley and Steve King both recorded hat tricks with Peter Moxham picking up the other point. Richard Kidd and Amar Al-Soufi got a point each for the Taxmen.

Not content with one win in the week Stanford C made it two and chalked up an even bigger win beating Hockley E 8-1. The same line up saw more hat tricks for Mark and Steve with two wins this time for Peter. Hermann Maier got the consolation point for Hockley.

Stanford C stay fifth in the table still six points behind Canvey Cwho cruised to an 8-1 win against their teammates from Stanford D. Jo Hills, Kevin Walsingham and Tony Westwell made up the Islanders team with Kevin and Tony undefeated on the night and Jo just losing out to Vaughan Chambers in the penultimate match of the night. Earlier Tony had been taken all the way to a fifth set by Jake Santiago.
