Thanks to Nigel Lamb who as non-playing captain stepped in to make up the numbers this week for Hullbridge B against Rawreth B after Ian Rattray had felt unwell during the pre-match knock-up and was unable to continue. Fred Dove was the star of the evening playing with a sandpaper bat and was a comfortable winner of his three matches. Nigel provided the banter as always and battled bravely but was a pale image of the Nigel of yesteryear. The only match going beyond three legs was the final and deciding match of the evening between Bruce Kettle and Matt Rolfe and was arguably the best game of the night with Bruce just coming up trumps for the Rawreth side. Three wins for Duncan Taylor, including an excellent four set victory over Steve Tilson, helped Rayleigh Mill lead 4-3 with two games to go against Castle Point. Then Chris Jacob won a close encounter with Steve Maltby 9 in the 5th and Barrie Delf came back from 2-1 down to win 3-2 against Steve Sawyer to take the match 5-4. Lots of games were won 12-10 so match could have gone either way. There were 4 five setters in a good night’s table tennis between Warehouse A and Runnymede A and a particularly close game as Bertie Makoli took Dave Bowles to deuce in four legs. In the battle of Rawreth, The C team beat their D team 8-1 and included three wins for Ben Warner and two each for Reece Seddon and Ben Mathews including, for Ben, a great win over Steve Kerns Duncan

Lentern B have eased into the top spot and are now 6 points clear with a game in hand. This week they won 8-1 against their ‘E’ team who played the 3 farmers again, Wayne, Brian and Ray. The only one who could make any impact was Wayne who beat John Lott, but otherwise Gus Heath and Paul Churn were untroubled. Ray did injure himself and had to concede the last two matches, but has now made a recovery, we wish him well. Hadleigh Forum B only suffered their 3rd defeat of the season, going down 5-4 to Lentern C. Lentern had the undefeated Mike Grout to thank for the bulk of their points, although he was pushed all the way, winning all his 3 matches in the 5th set, Les Tayler and Chris Crooks adding the extra points to seal the win. Mick Tappenden added two for the former leaders but was unable to beat Mike Grout. Rawreth E continued with their good recent form overcoming the youngsters of Hullbridge D 8-1. Steve and Chris Buer scored maximums and Justin Jeffery scored two, losing to Zoe Davies in the 5th set and earning Hullbridge their sole point. No other results have been received for the Canvey B and Customs A matches and the Hadleigh Forum C match has been re-arranged as Berti made a genuine mistake with the fixture date Barrie

This week saw the first competitive match that Simon Neil has played for 20 years. Simon was one of the league’s leading players in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Now at the ripe old age of 49, he returned for Rawreth F in their home game against Castle Point B. Simon proved he hasn’t lost it, winning all his matches. With one each from Andy Nunn and Adam Hill, Rawreth edged a close match 5 – 4. Keith Neville won two of Castle Point’s points. Maximums from Ron Coutts and Sarah Mapes gave RESSC a 6 – 3 victory over Hullbridge F. Ron was also in good form on RESSC’s visit to Castle Point C, again turning in a maximum. However, two wins apiece from the home side’s Richard Riebold, Paul Thompson and Colin Smith resulted in a comfortable 6 – 3 home win. There were also maximums for Wakering’s Stewart Mills and Paul England. Nigel Cook added two in their 8 – 1 home win over Rawreth F. Andy Deadman got the visitor’s single victory. However, Wakering were less successful when they visited Hullbridge D. The home side’s Paul Ogden was unbeaten and Sue Reece added two in a 5 – 4 win. Cliff Noakes got two of Wakering’s points. The Warehouse derby went with form, the C team overcoming the D team 6 – 3. Jonathan Allen was the star, being unbeaten all night, whilst Steve Bottom got two for the D team David

Rawreth H are continuing to climb up the table and now sit 3rd with 47 pts, 4 in front of Customs B who have 2 games in hand. In week 11 Rawreth, thanks to the dynamic duo of Dave Barnes and Jan Thorpe, beat Customs 6-3 both players recording hat-tricks, and they followed that up in week 13 with a 5-4 win over Canvey D with another hat-trick for Jan, this time supported by one each from Pat Townsley and Ken Field. Customs returned to winning ways in week 12 however, beating Rawreth J, but this game was determined more by those who didn’t play rather than those who did. Customs only fielded 2 players but Rawreth, not to be outdone, only fielded one! This left us with the unlikely scoreline of 6-1 to Customs. Hullbridge G are up to 5th the youngsters continuing their run of good form with their sixth straight victory 7-2 against Rawreth I. Good performances all round from James Goddard, Reece Harris-Griffiths and a hat-trick from Daniel Zeffie. Robbie Appleton got both points for Rawreth. It’s Invicta B who sit top of the table at the start of the New Year their 7-2 win over Canvey D giving them 61pts from 10 games, 5 ahead of Hockley C who have 2 games in hand. John Golding and Mike Keeble both recorded hat-tricks with Keith Baxter picking up the other point. Ray Baker and Stuart Curham got a point each for Canvey Paul
