Match Secretaries Report
The main issue in Division 1 was the relegation battle with the 3 protagonists being Uppermill A, Unison A and Rosehill. Uppermill struck first blood when defeating a below strength Coldhurst A, who were struggling with injuries, by a 7-3 scoreline. All the Uppermill team of Gary Crossley, Dave Grundy and Mark Simpson all won 2 whilst Simon King’s treble for Coldhurst was in vain.
We started off with the Over 40s, Over 50s and the Juniors in the morning, Alex Darlington winning his Junior group by beating Sophie Newton in the group stage but with Sophie finishing 2nd in the group, they avoided each other in the semi-final and met again, with Alex looking to win the Junior title for a 2nd consecutive year and Sophie looking to get her first Junior title, it was Sophie who prevailed in 4 sets, winning 3-1.
Unison F 5 v Denshaw A 5 Top of the table clash saw the spoils shared equally with Unison taking a 5-2 lead then Andrew Tyas defeating Jamall Akhtar 14-12 in the 5th game to inspire a spirited fight back by Denshaw with Gary Kershaw achieving man of the match.
At the other end of the table Owls C inflicted a 9-1 defeat of Denshaw B
With Josh Hudson stepping up from 3rd Div team for the 2nd week running, he showed his value by achieving man of the match and enabling Unison B to continue the chase for promotion.
Unison’s Jacob Reilly Cooper 2, Josh Hudson 3 and Grotton A’s, Steve Oliver 2, and Lionel Royle, Pete Morris 1 each.
The battle at Honeywell.
Elsewhere in Division 3, Deaf A beat Gilders 8-2. Ian Cockcroft winning 3 and Liaqat Ali & David 'The man that can' Varney won 2 and the doubles. Mark Craven bravely winning 2 against the League leaders.
What a week in the Oldham & District Table Tennis League.
Darryl Meredith showed why he will be a force to be reckoned with in the Oldham Closed Championships with a cool 3 wins over Rosehill and with Simon Hardwich and Big Dave Buckley winning 2, Honeywell A won 8-2.
