Division 1

This week started off with Basement Dwellers hosting Plan B in a match that was closely contested. For the home side both Vince Court and Jasper Pye recorded maximums, with player of the match being awarded to Vince for his unopposed maximum. Kerry Manicom put her new bat to good use and added a further 4 singles sets. With a clean sweep in the doubles, Basement Dwellers won a decisive victory with 31 points.

That said, Plan B made their opponents fight hard for each point led by Geoff Williams with 5 singles sets. Dave Smith kindly substituted for the injured Robin Arkel and added a further 4. Martin Shoots then added the final 2 singles sets. With no success in the doubles, Plan B rued the 11 sets that they lost by the minimum 2-point margin throughout the evening. With a little more finesse the scoreline would have looked markedly different from the 11 that they finished the match with.

Tuesday saw the clash of the two top teams from the qualifying round as Allsorts challenged Wiveliscombe. It was the home team’s Scott Milton who was the star of the evening as his maximum earned him the player of the match award. Curtis King gleaned one singles set as his averages took a tumble, and the ambidextrous Sifa Vea also ended the singles  with one set. The doubles were keenly contested and Allsorts came out on top with 6 sets, for a grand total of 17 for the evening.

Wiveliscombe played consistently throughout and gradually increased their lead as the match progressed. John Edbrooke led the way with 8 singles sets, with Paul Nutkins and David Woodland adding 6 sets apiece. Despite less success in the doubles, their 4 sets gave Wiveliscombe a winning total of 24 points.

It was the first outing for White Horse when they visited Gnomads. For the home team, Martin Rant was back on top form and his maximum earned him player of the match. Derek Mayall put in a solid performance with 6 singles sets, and Tony Brooks added the final 3. With a maximum in the doubles, Gnomads were the victors with 27 points.

After a bright start, White Horse led the field before gradually falling back as their opponents gradually reined them in. It was Ian Rew who initially hit the front and was the star performer with an excellent 7 singles sets. David Bryant never found his form and settled for 4 sets, with Jamie Robertson coming home with the final singles set. There was success in the doubles with 4 sets to give White Horse a final total of 16 points.

Division 2

Eagles had been hatching a plan for a successful match against  Drifters. High flier for the home team was Danny O’Leary who’s maximum earned him the player of the match award. Singles sets became harder to come by as Jack Smith and Tim Bosley added 4 and 1 sets respectively. With 2 sets gleaned in the doubles, Eagles finished the match perched on 16 points.

Drifters were both consistent and persistent throughout the match with David Smith leading the way with 8 singles sets. The on-form Nathaniel Southam, playing as substitute, added an excellent 7, and Andrew Miles concluded the singles with a solid 6. With a maximum in the doubles, Drifters plucked the victory on the evening with 30 points.

Waterrow started their campaign with a home match against Roy’s Boys, which turned out to be a very close affair. Eamon Farrelly top-scored for the home team with 8 singles sets and was well supported by Dennis Buckingham with 6. Russell Foote made his debut appearance with the addition of 3 sets. With success in 5 doubles sets, Waterrow ended the evening with 22 points. Roy’s Boys kept pace with their hosts and Barry Hooper won the player of the match award for his maximum. Paul Sams then scored 4 singles sets, with Roy Hooper adding the final 2. Everything hinged on the doubles and Roy’s Boys prevailed with 7 sets. When the scorecard was totted up Roy’s Boys also had 22 points to draw the match.
