Division 1

Allsorts ended their season when they were challenged by title contenders, Basement Dwellers. For the home team the opposition was strong, and both Scott Milton and Curtis King were restricted to 6 singles sets apiece. This tilted the match in favour of the visitors by, on one hand, denting Curtis’ averages, whilst on the other hand leaving the ambidextrous Sifa Vea to score one final singles set. The doubles were evenly contested with Allsorts winning 6 sets to give a grand total of 19 points for the evening. Whilst retaining the lead of division 1, Allsorts are still within the range of both Basement Dwellers and Wiveliscombe who both have games in hand.

Basement Dwellers got off to a strong start in the match and gradually extended their lead throughout. Vince Court was the player of the match, scoring the only maximum of the evening. The hard hitting Toby Kerslake had to settle for 6 singles sets this week, with Jasper Pye putting in a solid performance with 5 sets. Basement Dwellers just edged the doubles with 7 sets to give them the victory with 27 points, and setting up a grandstand finish to the season when they play their final match against Wiveliscombe.

 Division 2

Hawks ended their season with an all avian affair when they entertained Eagles. The home team got off to a flying start as captain, Mark Scyner, scored a maximum that crowned him player of the match. With his teammates egging him on, Alfie Southam just missed his maximum with an excellent 8 singles sets. Nathaniel Southam landed the final 3 singles sets before the team swooped in to score another maximum in the doubles. Hawks soared to the top of the division 2 table with a total of 29 points. As the current leaders of the division it remains to be seen if any other team can knock Hawks off their perch.

Eagles put up a good fight as they clawed back many sets. David Veale used all his experience to top-score with 6 singles sets, with his two wing men, Tim Bosley and Danny O’Leary, scoring 4 and 3 sets respectively. With success in 4 doubles sets, Eagles finished the match with a nest egg of 17 points.

Wanderers have been gaining in confidence as they progressed through the season and this week saw Roy’s Boys travelling to Minehead to do battle. The home team put in a strong and consistent performance with Steve Brooks and Laurie Chalk jointly top-scoring with 8 singles sets each. Cas Chalk concluded the singles with 4 sets. Wanderers had the better of the doubles with 6 sets won to give them the match victory with 26 points. This leaves them in a two-way tussle with Drifters for the division 2 title.

Roy’s Boys gave a good account of themselves and Barry Hooper was the player of the match with a maximum. The remaining 5 singles sets were scored by Roy Hooper before Paul Sams helped raise their doubles tally to 4 sets. Roy’s Boys started their long journey home with 18 points for their evening’s work.
