Results

Wanderers met up with Drifters at the Lawns to contest their match. For the home team, Jani Jasielczuk  was the Wandering star of the evening as he scored a maximum to clinch the player of the match award. The remaining singles sets were added by Laurie Chalk with a solid 6 to his credit. Against tough opposition Wanderers lost their way in the doubles but claimed 3 sets to finish the match with a creditable total of 18.

Drifters never deviated from their task and played consistently throughout the evening. Liz Fletcher led the way with 7 singles sets, supported by Dave Smith with 6 and Andrew Miles with 5. Drifters were definitely on course for the victory when they combined to score a maximum in the doubles, giving them the match with 27 points.

The only other match played this week featured last season’s division 1 champions, Wiveliscombe against division 2 champions, Plan B. For the home team, John Edbrooke, David Woodland and Paul Nutkins there were maximums all round, with David receiving the player of the match award. With a further maximum in the doubles, Wiveliscombe ended the evening with a grand slam score of 36 points. Whilst the victory appears emphatic this was far from the case and the home team were made to work hard for each set.

For Plan B Martin Shoots prevailed in 3 singles sets, with Geoff Williams and Robin Arkell adding a further 2 sets apiece. With no success in the doubles Plan B ended with the modest score of 7 points.

The scorecard records that a further 10 sets against Plan B were won by the 2-point minimum margin, with one singles set featuring Martin ending at 22 – 20. Further sets were also lost by narrow margins. Had Plan B demonstrated a little more finesse then the scoreline could have looked very different.
