Basement Dwellers maintained their grip on the top spot of the league table when they endured a tough match against Allsorts. The hard-hitting Toby Kerslake led the scoring for the home side with 6 singles sets. It was Mike Vickery’s first match of the season and he concluded the singles scoring with 5 sets. The doubles were closely contested and, with 5 sets added, the final score for Basement Dwellers ended at 16.

Allsorts soon gained the upper hand and gradually extended their lead throughout the evening. Scott Milton, also playing his first match of the season, was in splendid form and his maximum in the singles won him the player of the match award. Curtis King narrowly missed winning some of his singles sets that would have bolstered his averages, however, 6 sets were added. The ambidextrous Sifa Vea rounded off the singles scoring with 4 sets. With little between the two teams in the doubles, Allsorts prevailed with 6 sets to end the evening the victors with 25 points.

This week found Wanderers trekking over the hills, where last season’s division 1 champions, Wiveliscombe, lay in wait. The hosts were relentless and clinical, with maximums all round for Harry Woodland, David Woodland and Eamon Farrelly. Player of the match was awarded to David. With a maximum in the doubles, Wiveliscombe started their season with a grand slam score of 36 points.

Wanderers are still looking for the path to victory but this match was always going to be mission impossible. The only success of the evening fell to the veteran David Veale, who had to bring all his experience to bear to win a consolation singles set to avoid a whitewash. Final score: Wiveliscombe 36 – Wanderers 1.

Drifters hosted Gnomads at the Lawns and gave the division 1 visitors a hard-fought match. The scoreline did not reflect the quality of play by the home team that saw only Andrew Miles having any success in the singles. With 4 sets to his credit, Drifters gleaned one doubles set to end their evening with 5 points.

Gnomads were made to work hard for each set but remained focussed on the task in hand. Martin Rant and substitute for the evening, Geoff Williams, both scored maximums in the singles, with Geoff receiving the player of the match award. Derek Mayall scored an excellent 8 singles sets before the team concluded the match with a maximum in the doubles. Gnomads ended the evening with a final score of 35.

Hawks continued to develop their match skills when they entertained Roy’s Boys. The home team played very consistently as they gradually extended their dominance throughout the match. Mark Scyner earned the player of the match award for the only singles maximum of the evening. Alfie Southam scored an excellent 7 with, brother, Nathaniel, adding a further 6 singles sets. Hawks’ domination continued in the doubles with a further 7 sets to their credit to give them a comfortable victory with 29 points.

Roy’s Boys never settled during the match and it was only Barry Hooper who had any success in the singles  as he accounted for all 7 singles sets for the visitors. Barry then combined with Roy Hooper to add 3 doubles sets, raising the final tally for Roy’s Boys to 10 points for the evening.
