Gnomads faced a tough match when they hosted the current league leaders, Allsorts. The home team stuck to the task in hand and scored steadily throughout the evening. Martin Rant Led the way with 6, and was supported by Derek Mayall with 5 and Tony Brooks with 4 singles sets. There was little joy in the doubles with only 2 sets added to the scoreline. This gave Gnomads a final tally of 17.

Allsorts never had the match all their way in light of the stubborn resistance from the home team. Scott Milton was on top form, and his maximum earned him the player of the match award. Curtis King let his averages slip a little with 7, and the ambidextrous Sifa Vea concluded the singles with a further 2 sets. With a maximum in the doubles, Allsorts had a comfortable victory with 27 points.

Junior based Hawks were looking for a good result against Wanderers, who are currently at the foot of the league table. For the home team, Mark Scyner applied the pressure, and his maximum was rewarded with the player of the match award. Alfie Southam continued  to press, narrowly missing his maximum with an excellent 8 sets. Nathaniel Southam added one further singles set before combining with his teammates to close out the match with a maximum in the doubles. Hawks’ total for the match ended at 27 points.

This match was far from one-sided as Wanderers put up a good fight. Jani Jasielczuk and Laurie Chalk both top-scored for the visitors, winning 6 sets apiece. Junior teammate, Cass Chalk, was experiencing his first league match and played well adding 3 singles sets to the scorecard. With a consolation doubles set, Wanderers finished with a creditable 16 points.

Drifters stormed into a three point lead in the first game of their home match against last year’s division 1 champions, Wiveliscombe. It was Dave Smith who started the match in sparkling form before the visitors got into their stride. Dave added one further singles set, giving him a total of 4 points. Andrew Miles exploited his pimple bat to frustrate his opponents, and prevailed in 3 singles sets. With the ascendency of the visitors, the home team were unable to capitalise on any further sets, leaving their score at 7 for the match.

After the stuttering start, Wiveliscombe proceeded to close out the match. Paul Nutkins and Eamon Farrelly both scored maximums in the singles, with Paul receiving the player of the match award. David Woodland won 6 singles sets, before the team combined to score an unopposed maximum in the doubles. Wiveliscombe travelled home with 33 points for their evening’s work.

Hawks played a second match this week – this time against last year’s division 1 runners-up, Basement Dwellers. This was always going to be a hard match for the home team. In the singles, Mark Scyner had the greatest success with 3, and Alfie Southam added one more set. The doubles proved equally demanding but Mark together with Nathaniel Southam found success with a single set. This brought the scoreline for Hawks to a modest 5 points, despite their perseverance throughout the match.

Basement Dwellers showed no mercy all evening. Jasper Pye had his first outing of the season and was rewarded with a maximum in the singles. But it was the hard hitting Toby Kerslake who won the player of the match award for his maximum. The remaining 7 singles sets were won by Mike Vickery, who was enjoying only his second outing of the year. Basement Dwellers had a clean sweep in the doubles, and their maximum gave them a final score of 34 points and an emphatic victory.
