Division 1

The match between Basement Dwellers and Allsorts was a close-fought affair with little between the teams all evening. The hard hitting Toby Kerslake powered his way to the only maximum of the evening to earn the player of the match award. Mike Vickery won 6 singles sets, with the final 3 added by Kerry Manicom. The match outcome was eventually decided in the doubles where Basement Dwellers’ 6 sets gave them a narrow victory with 24 points.

Allsorts held their own throughout the match. Scott Milton led the way, despite a niggling shoulder injury, with 6 singles sets. Matt Lawrence continues to struggle with back pain but prevailed in 4 singles sets. Andy Berry also added 4 in the singles. With their opponents getting the better of the doubles, the 4 sets won were not enough to take the match, with their final tally rising to 20 points.

Division 2

After persistent injuries and illness, Shooting Stars at last got their season underway when they entertained newly formed Minehead Wanderers. From the outset the home team relentlessly started to dominate the singles sets. Martin Shoots, Geoff Williams and Robin Arkel each scored maximums in the singles, with Geoff Williams receiving the player of the match award. Shooting Stars then completed another maximum in the doubles for a decisive victory with a grand-slam 36 points.

Wanderers have only just embarked on their table tennis adventure and their members, Tim Bovey, David Veale and Laurie Chalk, competed with determination throughout the match but narrowly missed clinching a set. The nets and edges did not favour the visitors on the evening, which could have changed the outcome of many sets. The match was however played in great spirit by all.

Drifters faced a hard match when they had a visitation from Waterrow. Under pressure from the start of the match it was only Dave Smith that could make any headway by winning 4 singles sets. Crispin Barber added a further two but Andrew Miles never managed to put his pimples to good effect, adding one final singles set. Liz Fletcher was the doubles specialist for the match and helped her team secure 2 doubles sets. Final score for Drifters: 9 points.

Waterrow dominated proceedings from the start with singles maximums for Eamon Farrelly and Harry Woodland, with the player of the match award going to Eamon. Dennis Buckingham added an excellent 8 singles sets before the visitors went on to score another maximum in the doubles for a convincing victory. Waterrow ended the match with 35 points and a clear lead in the division 2 table.

Hawks were on good form when they played visitors, Roy’s Boys. From early in the match the junior home team asserted their dominance led by Mark Scyner. His maximum in the singles earned him the player of the match award. Alfie Southam scored a valuable 6 singles sets, with Nathaniel Southam adding the final 3. With a maximum in the doubles, Hawks had a convincing win with 27 points.

Roy’s Boys gradually fell behind throughout the match but both Barry and Roy Hooper put up a good fight for 6 and 4 singles sets respectively. In the doubles, Peggy Hooper helped her team to glean 2 sets, bringing Roy’s Boys total to 12 for the evening.
