White HorseAllsorts21 - 28
DriftersWiveliscombe   2 - 36

White Horse started their season by entertaining Allsorts in what was the longest match of the year so far. Both teams were evenly matched which led to only three of the games being settled in three sets, and many  going to deuce. From the off it was Andy Godfrey who led the field for White Horse with 6. Ian Rew and Jamie Robertson were only a couple of lengths behind with 4 points apiece. White Horse claimed the doubles with 7 points and at the finishing post ended the evening on 21 points.

Allsorts battled hard and Matt Lawrence gained the player of the match award for his maximum. Mark Scyner was substitute for the evening, and he too scored a maximum. Andy Berry played steadily for the final 4 singles points. With 6 doubles points the final tally for Allsorts was a victorious 28 points.

Drifters, in their first home match of the season, had the daunting task of playing one of the perennial division 1 title challengers, Wiveliscombe. The home team put up a spirited fight, with some sets being settled by the narrowest of margins. One singles point apiece was scored by Liz Fletcher and by Andrew Miles. Crispin Barbour is gaining experience with each match played and will no doubt see his points tally rise as the season progresses. Dave Smith was the doubles specialist for the evening but the opposition was too strong on the night to make an impression on the score line. Drifters ended the evening with a creditable two points.

Wiveliscombe were on excellent form and each player – Paul Nutkins, Ben Cooper and David Woodland - scored a maximum with David being awarded player of the match. With a maximum in the doubles it was a Grand Slam 36 points for Wiveliscombe to put them joint top of the league table.
