Division 1

In a foot of the table battle to avoid relegation, Shooting Stars travelled to Stogumber to play their away match against White Horse. Overall, the match was a very canny affair. Whilst it may have lacked the fireworks of earlier matches, special mention must be made of the exceptional number of points scored off the net and edges. Fortunately, these points evened themselves out over the whole match.

For White Horse, David Bryant continued his run of form and top-scored with 7 hard-earned points, as his opponents endeavoured to prevent David from having many attacking opportunities. The remaining 2 singles points were scored by Ian Rew – a score that did not do justice to Ian’s efforts on the night. In the doubles, Jamie Robertson helped his team-mates to gain a further 4 points to give White Horse a final score of 13 points. This leaves White Horse at the foot of the table with little likelihood of improving their position before the season concludes.

Shooting Stars were on form, and consistent throughout the match. Robin Arkell was the star of the evening. Robin regained the form he has shown in previous years to score his first maximum of the season and receive a well-earned player of the match award. Geoff Williams just missed his maximum, with 8 and Martin Shoots put in a captain’s performance with a solid 6 singles points. With maximum doubles points Shooting Stars had a comfortable victory with 32 points. This lifts Shooting Stars out of the relegation zone this week, meaning their two matches against Roy’s Boys will be crucial in the fight for these lower positions.
