Division 1

This week saw the clash of the top two teams from last season with Wiveliscombe hosting Basement Dwellers. John Edbrooke led the way for the home team, earning the player of the match award for his maximum. David Woodland added 7 more, with Ben Cooper scoring the final singles point. The doubles were shared at 7 points apiece leaving the home side with the narrowest of victories with 24 points. Basement Dwellers’ performance could best be described as steady, with Toby Kerslake making the most headway with 6 points. Vince Court, and his challenging hard bat, managed 5 singles points, as did Mike Vickery. With no advantage from the doubles, Basement Dwellers ended the evening with 23 points

White Horse entertained their neighbours, Gnomads. This week David Bryant opened his scoring account with 5 points, with Ian Rew matching his score. Jamie Robertson also got off the mark with 3 points. With 5 doubles points added, White Horse passed the finishing post with 18 points. For Gnomads, Nigel Foster continued his excellent season’s start with a maximum, but it was Captain, Martin Rant, who was awarded player of the match for his maximum. It was first time out for team-mate, Steve Wells, who scored a valuable 2 singles points. Gnomads had the better of the doubles with 8 points, giving them a final score of 28.

Shooting Stars had their first match of the season against rising stars, House Martyns. Geoff Williams led the way with 7 points as the hosts started strongly. Martin Shoots had some incredible rallies and ended the evening with 4 points. Robin Arkell added the final 3 singles points. As the match progressed the scoring tailed off somewhat, with only 4 doubles points added. Shooting Stars ended the match with 18 points to find themselves at the bottom of the division 1 table. House Martyns carried on from last week’s success. Scott Milton scored a maximum for the player of the match award, Curtis King only missed his maximum by 1 point, and Matt Lawrence scored an excellent 6 singles points. With maximum doubles points House Martyns took away 32 points to remain top of division 1.

Division 2

Minehead Breakaways were in action for the second successive week when they challenged Allsorts. Their opponents proved to be somewhat formidable, and Andrew Berry was restricted to 7 singles points. Kerry Manicom made her first team appearance this season and scored a handy 4 points. Arnould Guilliard added the final singles point. The doubles were drawn at 6 points apiece, giving Minehead Breakaways a total of 18 points. Allsorts had a solid start to their season. Player of the match was the ambidextrous Sifa Vea who scored the only maximum of the night. David Smith played well and gained an excellent 7 points. Steve Palmer added 4 further singles points. Barbara Parker was Allsorts’ doubles specialist for the evening and, with 6 points scored, it was a comfortable victory for Allsorts with 26 points.
