Division 1

On the starting line this week were White Horse as House Martyns swooped in for their match. From the off the home team never got fully into their stride, with their aim of improving their position in the league table. Both Ian Rew and David Bryant put up resolute resistance against their on-form opponents. They scored 4 points apiece, with Jamie Robertson adding the final singles point. There was little success in the doubles where only 1 point could be salvaged. White Horse ended the evening with a total of 10 points, meaning they remain tethered to the foot of the table.

House Martins were flying high all evening and captain, Scott Milton, scored a maximum. Curtis King also scored a maximum for the player of the match award, which will help improve his averages. Matt Lawrence then added 4 well-earned singles points. With maximum doubles points, House Martyns could celebrate their 31-point victory as they migrated home to Minehead.

Wiveliscombe entertained near neighbours, Gnomads this week. The score line did not reflect how close many of the sets were, with five of them taken to deuce. For the home team David Woodland scored the only maximum of the evening for the player of the match award. John Edbrooke missed his maximum by only a single point, with Paul Nutkin adding a solid 6 points. Wiveliscombe also had the better of the doubles with a further 8 points. Total score for Wiveliscombe: 31 points.

Gnomads battled hard, losing many sets by the narrowest of margins. Martin Rant was their star player with an excellent 7 points. Nigel Foster was restricted to 1 point, to conclude the singles scoring. There was however some success in the doubles where Derek Mayall helped the visitors to 6 points. The final score for Gnomads was 14 points, meaning that both teams remained static in the league table this week.

Division 2

There was a close-run local derby between Minehead Breakaways and visitors, Drifters. In the singles it was Breakaways that had the advantage, with a sparkling maximum from Kerry Manicom who wins the player of the match award. Andy Berry was close behind with an excellent 7, and Arnould Guilliard added a vital 5 singles points. David Veale was the doubles specialist for the evening, but the home side couldn’t overcome their visitors’ doubles play. The 3 doubles points added meant Breakaways managed to clinch the victory with a total of 24 points.

Drifters’ singles play was steady with Dave Smith leading the way, and just missing his maximum by a single point. Andrew Miles played well with his instinctive style and scored 5, with Liz Fletcher adding the final singles point. There was greater success in the doubles where 7 points were scored, leaving Drifters just short of a victory with a total of 21 points.

Allsorts entertained the improving junior Hawks this week. It was the ambidextrous Sifa Vea who took the player of the match award with a fine maximum. Steve Palmer only missed out on his maximum by a single point, with Mike Lawrie adding his support with a further 3 singles points. It was maximum points in the doubles that gave Allsorts a decisive victory with 29 points.

Hawks continue to gain experience and confidence. Captained by Mark Scyner, who top-scored with 7, the remaining 6 singles points were added by Alfie Southam. Nathaniel Southam was the doubles specialist for the evening and a further 2 doubles points were scored. Hawkes finished the match with a creditable 15 points.
