Division 1

The first match to report this week turned out to be a thrilling tussle as House Martyns hosted Shooting Stars. The home team are on great form and challenging for the top spot in division 1, however, their visitors were determined to put up a fight. For the home team it was Curtis King who consistently returned almost every ball to score the only maximum of the evening. This gave Curtis the player of the match award and helped improve his match averages. Captain Scott Milton missed his maximum by a single point after a titanic game against Stars’ Geoff Williams. It was the final singles game of the evening which turned into a 5 setter - with each set going to deuce. Matt Lawrence played very well, working hard for his 6 singles points. House Martyns had the better of the doubles with 7 points, giving a final tally for the evening of 30 points.

Shooting Stars’ campaign was led by Geoff Williams who played his best match to date. With some sets lost by the narrowest of margins, 7 singles points were achieved. The remaining 3 singles points were added by Robin Arkell. In the doubles Martin Shoots helped his team to score 4 points to give Shooting Stars a total of 14 for the match.

Gnomads have reclaimed top spot in division 1 this week after their match against White Horse. From the off, Gnomads galloped away from the visitors as White Horse never got into their stride. Both Martin Rant and Derek Mayall scored maximums, with the player of the match award going to Martin. Nigel Foster scored a solid 6 singles points to keep the pressure on their visitors. With an excellent 8 doubles points, Gnomads cantered to a comfortable victory with 32 points.

White Horse struggled to stamp their authority on this match, falling behind from the first set. David Bryant made some ground with 4 points and Ian Rew concluded the singles with a single point. David and Ian joined forces in the doubles to win a further 3 points. With a total of 8 points for the evening, White Horse remain tethered to the foot of the table.

Division 2

Junior-based Hawkes hosted Drifters at the Lawns. Captain, Mark Scyner showed everybody the way with the only maximum of the night for the player of the match award. Alfie Southam continues to improve as he gains experience, scoring an excellent 7. Nathaniel Southam also scored an important 2 singles points. Tom Lawrence was the doubles specialist for the evening and 1 point was added to the team total. Looking at the scorecard, there were no less than 7 deuce sets, and wins by the narrowest of margins. On another day the team score could have been higher, but Hawks can be proud of their final tally of 19.

Drifters were very consistent throughout the match. Both Liz Fletcher and Dave Smith scoring 7 points apiece, and Andrew Miles adding 6. The whole match really hinged on the doubles where Drifters’ maximum gave them the victory with 29 points.
