Three Thornbury members brought home trophies from the recent Bristol & District league Closed tournament, which was held at SGS college on Sunday 31st January 2016.
Emily Standing won the Ladies Singles title in a thrilling 5 ends. Her opponent, Michele Reeves came flying out of the blocks and went into a 2 set lead with her consistent attacks proving too much to handle. However, Emily got herself and her backhand block going to take the 3rd and 4th sets to take the match into a final set decider. At 9-9 in the 5th it could have gone either way but after two hard fought points, Emily came out on top and in the process won her 3rd Ladies Singles title (9-11,5-11,11-9,11-3,11-9).
Dave Reeves and Anthony Kent were victorious in the Open Doubles event, beating Adam Ratajczak and Joe Ratajczak in a high quality final (14-12,11-9,11-9).
Dave was also the Runner-up in the Open Singles event where he came up against an inspired Joe Ratajczak playing some of the best table tennis of the day . This final was a classic battle between the looping attacker and brick-wall defender with some outstanding rallies for all to see. However, after 4 tough sets, Joe won his first Open Singles title (11-4,11-9,7-11,11-7)!
