Division One
Tackleway Aruna are leading a thrilling three-way contest with Bexhillians A and Bexhillians B for the Division One championship. At the time of writing the gap is six points but both chasing teams have a game in hand. Our club has never previously won the top prize so we’re all wishing John Boreham, James Gorridge, Martin Kellaway, Simon Phillipsz and Arthur Bracken the best of luck in their bid to make history.
Tackleway Boll are in a similar three-way struggle at the opposite end of the top division. Unfortunately the only two teams below them are stablemates Tackleway Chuquin and Tackleway Drinkhall. However, having won four games already this season, Mike and Roy Funnell, Muhammad Ali Kiani and Roger Pingram have shown already that they almost certainly have enough to beat the drop.
Reigning Division Two champions Tackleway Chuquin are finding it hard to reproduce last season’s form in the top division. Danny Rickaby, Adrian Goodrum, Jacob McCarthy and Kevin Rowe are competing well and are picking up points regularly but so far have only avoided defeat in their two matches against Tackleway Drinkhall and currently sit bottom of the pile.
Tackleway Drinkhall also gained promotion last season (as Tackleway Ehrlich) and are similarly having to adjust to a better calibre of opponent. A couple of creditable draws against higher placed teams, including one against title-chasing Bexhillians B, have given Sachin Davis, George Gorokhov, Alfie Dennen and Aaron Pain a good chance of avoiding finishing last in their debut season in the top division. This would be no mean feat!
Division Two
Tackleway Ehrlich now consists of Peter Smalley, Andy Brown, Andre De Carteret and Michael Charter and are very well placed in Division Two. While the gap to the promotion places is quite wide with only six games left, there is room for optimism for a team that has picked up points in every game bar one so far this season.
Reigning Division Three champions Tackleway Freitas have certainly noticed the gulf in class that comes with promotion. Two victories against bottom team Tackleway Gaoyjuan combined with a walkover win currently keep Thomas Mann, Mat Gilman, Max Foster and Kevin McEwan third from the bottom of the table, looking over their shoulder at troubled Hollington B.
As anticipated, Tackleway Gaoyjuan have found the step-up to the higher division a challenge. Despite this, John Quintos, Martin Woodward, Stuart Batchelor and Andy Holmes are relishing the experience. While their only victory to date came courtesy of a walkover, they particularly enjoyed a battling draw away to high-flying Hollington C.
Division Three
Tackleway Harimoto currently sit eighth in Division Three but would certainly be higher had they not suffered a remarkable five 6-4 defeats in thirteen matches. Chris Embury, Josh Smith, Stephen Milton and Ben Profit will be looking to squeeze a few more points out of the return fixtures in the latter part of the season.
Tackleway Ito are the highest placed Tackleway team in the division in sixth place. Phil Talbot, Chris Floyd and Peter Lilja have been a model of consistency this season, taking points from all bar two of their fixtures to date without achieving a single four-point win.
Tackleway Jingkun are ninth in the division but well clear of the bottom places thanks mainly to a superb 9-1 triumph away to struggling Hollington F and a creditable draw against Tackleway Ito. Peter Agar, Nigel Hobbs, Derek Goodsell, Thomas Porter and Michael Cruttenden have rarely come away without at least a point this season.
Tackleway Karlsson feature no less than three new players and therefore deserve huge credit for their three victories to date. In tenth place and well clear of Hollington F at the time of writing, Ian Edwards, Michael Cogswell, Peter Mann and James Rickaby look well set to avoid the wooden spoon position, which would represent a very respectable first season at league level..
Finally, honourable mentions and thanks from the club to our two Division Three reserve players: Doug Bick, making a welcome return to league table tennis after overcoming health issues, and John Harris in his debut season.
