Match Report

A comprehensive win by 8 sets to 2 for the Taverners at the VH last night to "avenge" our defeat to Torbay Academy 3 back in November.

Another enjoyable evening against one of the nicest teams in Division 3 who all play table tennis in the right way with a bit of banter thrown in! It was another example of a match starting on time, moving quickly on and finishing just before 9.30.

Colin is playing superbly at the moment and deservedly was "Player of the Match". After an excellent comeback from Peter in the first leg for Colin to edge home 17-15, Colin won all his 3 sets in three games and fairly comfortably. Is he back to the halcyon days of yesteryear?! On this evidence and with his attack working well (and no service errors this time!! he is certainly getting there!!

Martin was close behind Colin with yet another maximum with only Andy causing him problems and taking him to 5 games. Martin also redressed his 2 losses from the first half of the season with wins over Andy and Peter. If we manage to win the Division- still a difficult task - it will be largely down of course to Martin and backed up in recent weeks by Colin.

The doubles set featuring Colin and Martin was a cliffhanger with John and Peter just losing 14-12 in the final leg for our 8-2 win. Taverners still remain undefeated in the doubles but there has been some scares along the way!

My form has been pretty inconsistent of late and this showed in losing the 2 sets. 2 games to the good, John got his consistent attack together and won the final 3 games convincedly. John seems to play his shots in an effortless way which often proves a successful method for him. I then played the "Rocket Man" Andy and after a close first leg, I lost in 3. Andy may have a "hit and miss" sort of game but I felt the full force of his attack when it is going well and was subjected to a bit of a battering!

I did beat Peter in an edgy 5 games. I certainly needed a win especially after losing to Peter in straight games last time. Peter is a very consistent performer and you have to work very hard and concentrate to win!

All in all a good evening for Taverners and an excellent evening to promote table tennis in the South Devon and Torbay Table Tennis League.
