Match Report

Cracking match last night against two teams jostling for 2nd spot  with TTTA2 looking good to take the crown. Only two games were over in 3 sets which was indicative of the competitiveness. Jim McIvor was deservedly Player of the Match with a maximum. With only a brief warm-up, he had a stuttered start against Alan Maynard. But once he got the feel of the conditions and got his attacking punch-chops on his backhand pimple side going, there was no stopping him. The 5-setters included Alan v Chris Scriven who are almost identical in style – neither giving up on any shot in any rally. A late charge at the end by Alan brought it to 8-8 in the 5th, but Chris was the more consistent right at the death and took the game. Louis Wilshire, high on toffees, was really consistent against Alan, giving Maynard a lesson in angling the ball, but in the end was unlucky to fall short in the 5th set. Joseph Edwards’ clash against Chris was a great watch – Joseph playing Chris’s defence just about right to secure a marvellous win 12-10 in the 5th.

Martin Sharp played the best I’ve seen him in the opener against Chris, and was looking good teaming up with Alan in the doubles to take the win, but Jim and Chris had the stamina and guile to run away with it in the last set. The match finished bang on time, so no fines for anyone, except for Joseph for losing his rag against Jim and Alan for shouting at himself too loudly!!

Thanks for the toffee Louis, it was a really good night of quality TT. Thanks too to Clive Banham for coming along and scoring a few.

The 5-5 result keeps both teams in the runners-up mix with Gulls 1 point behind Torre Titans and Falcons on the same points as Raptors in 3rd. All to play for…!
