Match Report

Another damaging defeat for the Taverners, this time against the Gulls who won impressively by 9 sets to 1 at the Village Hall.

Having said that, the final score could have been a lot closer had we not lost all the four sets that went to 5 games and 3 of them from a 2-1 lead.

I thought both Colin and Martin played well and I really felt for Martin when after coming back from 2 games down against Joseph and "suffering" 2 edges at 8-8 in the fifth, Martin came back to level but then only to lose 15-13!!

Gulls look a good all-round team with a mixture of experience and youthful talent. Alan M continues to get better (I am sure I have said that before!) , Allen P still retains his consistent attack to trouble opponents and now young Joseph is contributing to the team with strong performances. Last night Joseph got better as the evening progressed and can be considered a very promising player for the future. Gulls also have Martin Sharp waiting "in the wings"!

For Taverners it looks like relegation is on the cards even at this early stage of the season but we will keep fighting and enjoy table tennis as always.

Finally, congrats to the Gulls on their performance and for an excellent evening. It may have been another late finish - this time 10.20 pm- but at least no worries playing at the VH!
