PRESS REPORT – Sunday 8th Jan 2023
There were no scheduled league fixtures this week but there were several rearranged matches and handicap cup matches.
Although not affecting the top of the table there were two comprehensive victories in the first division. Brixham Sharks had an excellent whitewash victory at Halwell over the B side, the Sharks’ Chris Harper, Clive Banham and Gordon Holmes were rarely troubled as they dropped just 5 games coasting to victory.
NA Buzzards, Sonja Ryland, Kevin Nicholls and Herbie Sage, also secured a 10-0 victory over Halwell A which was completed dropping just 2 games.

In the second division Taverners remain the only winless team as the only other team without a win in the division, NA Owls, defeated them 8-2. Wojtek Cyron and Curtis Sage were unbeaten for the Owls as they climb up the table away from relegation worries!
In the third Division Torre Vikings had two outings to Teign School; their first saw a 9-1 defeat to NA Kestrels whose Andy Millman and Rob Williams were in fine form, their second encounter against NA Hawks was a fine 6-4 victory led by a Steve Russell maximum.
There were some cracking close encounters in the next round of cup matches.
Singles Handicap Cup:
The Brixham Club are going well in both cup competitions, the latest victory being a comfortable win in the Singles Cup for the Trawlers over NA Kites, 249-227. In an all Newton Abbot encounter the Merlins and Raptors were all square on 223 points after the sixth set but then the Raptors went in to overdrive to win by 26 points. Similarly it was very close between NA Owls and Torre Tornadoes initially but the Owls took control in the last few sets to win by 50 points. The NA Vultures suffered the biggest defeat of the round going down to club mates the Harriers by 91 points.

Doubles Handicap Cup:
All the matches in the doubles cup were incredibly close. There was an excellent match at Torre between two of their teams, the Titans eventually defeating the Tornadoes 350-343. There were two Newton Abbot v Torbay Academy matches that couldn’t be much closer. First Division NA Eagles took on Fourth Division Torbay Academy giving them an 8 start and were leading by 1 point going into the final encounter, but an excellent final leg 11-2 saw the Academy team of Marie Dillon, Julie Frost and Graham Maynard win the encounter by 7 points. NA Condors defeated Torbay Academy 6 on the adjacent table. The Academy led early on but the Condors fought back and started the final set with a 9 point advantage, clinging on to their lead and eventually winning the match by 18 points.
