PRESS REPORT – Sunday 5th Jan

The first week in the New Year is set aside for handicap cup matches in both the Dyment Doubles Shield and the Singles Challenge Cup competitions.

Third Division Torre Panthers excellent 21point victory over First Division NA Buzzards in the Dyment Doubles Shield was the most impressive victory of the round. Rob Burridge with Steve and Carl Tucker had the Panthers just 14 points ahead going into the final set which proved too much for the Buzzards to pull back. Rob Burridge and Carl Tucker winning the final set to take the match for the Panthers 364-343.

Just two other matches took place in the Dyment Doubles which were both ‘in house’ affairs at Newton Abbot and Torbay Academy.  At Teign School NA Eagles beat NA Hawks 375-347. Andy Tyrrell, Jim McIvor and Dan Webster-Hall got the Eagles off to a good start and kept the Hawks at arm’s length eventually winning by 28 points.

In another close match at Torbay Academy the fifth team, Neville Cregan, John Fowler and Peter Moretta defeated the third team 315-275.

NA Eagles had the biggest win of the week as they defeated Marldon 381-315 in the Singles Challenge Cup.

The First Division Eagles team of Andy Tyrrell, Jim McIvor and Lauren Loosemore, after a dodgy start, were too consistent for their Second Division opponents. The Eagles are going well in both cup competitions.

NA Falcons, still in both cup competitions, had to fight all the way against Torbay Academy 5. The Falcons team of Mike Dummett, Chris Baron and Louis Wilshire were behind until the 7th set but finished well to win the match 358-336.  Second Division NA Kestrels put in a great performance against First Division NA Condors in another all Newton Abbot contest. The Kestrels were two points ahead going in to the last two sets but the Condors’ Giles Tushingham and David Davies won the final two sets to win the match 361-334.

There were two re-arranged league matches also played this week.  In the Third Division the Hasbeens had a 7-3 victory at Newton Abbot over the Harriers, Richard Fitzgerald and Alan Tyrrell with maximums for the Hasbeens.  In the Fourth Division NA Merlins climbed 3 places in the league as they defeated Brixham Swifts 10-0. David Olver, Chris Bishop and Eve James, the Merlins’ players, dropped just a couple of games in their whitewash victory.
