SOUTH DEVON & TORBAY TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE

Just a handful of results in the Albany Florists-Sponsored South Devon & Torbay Table Tennis League as there were no programmed league matches.  However, several rearranged matches took place, the most significant being a top of the table clash in the Third Division.  Top side NA Hawks defeated second-placed Denbury Tykes 8-2, to open up a nice lead at the top of the table. Tykes fought all the way with Steve Metcalfe particularly frustrated, losing his three singles sets and the doubles all in the 5th deciding game. Hawks’ Ben Swettenham kept up his 100% start to the season getting the better of Tykes’ Pat Darch who was also unbeaten going in to the match. David Doxsey, on his first start, and Doug Morgan supported Swettenham in an impressive all-round team performance by the Hawks. Dawlish Diamonds, with Bruce Freeman in fine form, got their first win of the season defeating NA Falcons 6-4.

NA Buzzards’ fine start to the season continued with a narrow 6-4 win over Torbay Academy 2, which lifts them into 3rd place in the First Division.  Buzzards’ Kevin Nicholls was very impressive, picking up his 3rd successive maximum comfortably winning his sets in three games, before being joined by Jon Cheung to win the decisive last doubles. Sonja Ryland, on her debut for the Buzzards, showed glimpses of her previous championship winning form.

Brixham’s Ian Saxby was man of the match for the Imports as they beat Taverners in the only 2nd Division match played. Taverners took an early 2-1 lead and were 3-3, but lost the last 4 sets to go down 3-7.

Richard Salt was pushed all the way but maintained his 100% start to the season as he led the NA Kites to a 7-3 victory over Brixham Swifts. The Kites’ Lewis Short was unlucky not to join Salt with a maximum, just losing out to Marilyn Parton 10-12 in the fifth.
