Press Report 13th Mar 2016

SOUTH DEVON & TORBAY TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE.

Torbay Academy 6 stretched their lead at the top of the Fourth Division to 18 points with a fine 8-2 win over second-placed NA Kestrels. Jakub Piwowar & Curtis Sage both retained their 100% records for the season with maximums, whilst Peter Tarjan & Luke Robins’ wins over Lucas Bradshaw secured the 2 points for the Kestrels. Archer Snow was in fine form for NA Kites who stay in contention for the runners-up spot with a 7-3 victory over Torre Tigers. Torbay Academy 5’s whitewash over basement side Pure Torre has them level with Kites in third place.

NA Batmen closed the gap at the top of the First Division to within just 4 points of Denbury Imports with an excellent 9-1 win over Torbay Academy 1. Kevin Nicholls & Shaun Gibbs were unbeaten for the Batmen, but the Academy’s Patrik Cincala prevented the whitewash with a fine singles win over Dennis Gibbs. Brixham Sharks, in third place, eventually defeated stablemates Brixham Gulls 7-3, but not without a great fight by the Gulls. Mark Smith’s victory over Adam Shipway and Mick Mercer’s defeat of Josh Millman had the Gulls in front, and when Mercer also defeated Gordon Holmes making the score 3-3, a shock might have been on the cards, but that was as close as it got for the Gulls as the Sharks won the remaining 4 sets.

The top two sides in the Second Division both won but did not have an easy ride. Leaders NA Buzzards defeated Dawlish Aces 6-4 thanks largely to another Ed Crawford maximum. Second-placed Brixham Imports had Martin Sharp in top form as they defeated Marldon 7-3.  The Imports close to within 5 points of the Buzzards although the Buzzards still have a game in hand. Torbay Academy 3’s Dan Webster-Hall was undefeated as the Academy recovered from 3-4 down to secure a 6-4 victory over NA Eagles with a 5th game victory in the final doubles.

Catching up with a backlog of fixtures, Brixham Dolphins will shortly start to challenge towards the top of the Third Division. Their whitewash of Dawlish Drifters is a sign of things to come for the Dolphins: the Shipley twins, Nick & Stuart along with Joe Holmes easily brushing aside the struggling Drifters. Tony Nguyen with his 8th maximum of the season for Torre Bats helped them defeat NA Falcons 8-2. Nguyen, has more man of the match awards than any other player in all the Divisions and now leads the Third Division averages.

Torbay Academy 2 had a comfortable 5-0 victory over Battlers in the Dyment Doubles shield. NA Eagles eventually overcame Brixham Imports 5-3 in a close encounter, thanks to a great performance from Andy Tyrrell well backed up by Jim McIvor.
