Press Report 29th Mar 2015

Robert Excell Photography-Sponsored South Devon & Torbay Table Tennis League

With just 2 weeks of the league season to go the Second and Third Division champions have been decided.

The Battlers 9-1 win over bottom side Marldon Tykes was enough to confirm them as champions of Division 2. Keith Hawkins, Peter Nicholson & Ed Thompson remain unbeaten and currently have an unassailable 20 point lead. The fight for runners-up spot has been made more interesting with NA Eagles’ fine 8-2 victory over Marldon, climbing within 2 points of Taverners in second place. Another Dave Wills maximum helped Torbay Academy III to a 7-3 victory at Brixham over the Imports. Brixham sides Pirates and Swallows played out a 5-5 draw, with Ben Deakin unbeaten for the Pirates.

Denbury Tykes clinched the Third Division title with a 9-1 win over Brixham Panthers. Steve Metcalfe, Martin Dilkes, Pat and Huw Darch lead Dawlish Diamonds by a massive 33 points, winning all their games this season except for a draw against the Diamonds at the start of the season. Two wins by Brixham Diamonds, as they catch up with their fixtures, see them moving up the table.

Matches played in the First Division included an excellent 9-1 win for NA Buzzards over the Dawlish Aces. Connor Adams & Mike Kiff gained maximums for the Newton Abbot side. Josh Millman was in fine form for Brixham Gulls as they beat Halwell 6-4, as too were Nick Halse and Dennis Gibbs as NA Batmen defeated bottom side Torbay Academy II 7-3.

In the Fourth Division, third-placed Brixham Dolphins pushed champion contenders NA Falcons all the way before going down 6-4.  The Falcons need 14 points from their remaining 2 matches to take the title away from current leaders Torbay Academy IV. Fast-improving NA Hawks move up to fourth place, with a 6-4 win over Torbay Academy V.

In the Cup, NA Buzzards claimed a place in the Challenge Cup final with a 5-3 win at Torbay Academy III. Holders of Dyment Doubles shield, Torbay Academy I, saw off Halwell 5-2 and will meet Denbury Tykes in one semi-final while the Academy II side were beating their fourth side 5-0 and will play NA Falcons in the other semi-final.
