Match Report

Luton Invicta 2 maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a narrow 6-4 win at Bluebell Village Hall, home of Boxley 1. They needed an 11-8 5th leg success in the Doubles to secure the victory which summed up the closeness of the match where a total of 44 legs were played between the 2 sides. It was good to see Phil Goldsmith in the Luton line-up after a long absence from competitive table tennis and he showed he still retains a good level of ability( along with the odd expletive !) with some impressive flat hitting which did for Lyndon Gurr and Gary Hentschel. Ian Sayer also beat the Boxley duo but just missed out on a treble losing 11-9 in the 5th to Barry Roles. Roles also beat Tony Boarer over 4 close legs and Goldsmith 3 straight to get a maximum. Boarer, the Luton Skipper, had a good match partnering Sayer to Doubles success and beating Gurr from 2 legs down. He nearly achieved a similar comeback against Hentschel but the Boxley man just held on 11-9 in the decider to get the host's 4th point.
