BREAKAWAY TOP TWO DIVISIONS
DIVISION ONE
Breakaway A 9, Tower A 1
Breakaway consolidated their top position with another emphatic win, this time over bottom placed Tower for whom John Callow scored a lonely point by beating Mason McLarney in straight sets. Tim Baker and Paul Callow came closest to winning in their doubles against Breakaway’s hat-trick heroes Paul Corran and Malcolm Cummings.
Arbory 3, Copy Shop A 7
Both teams were joint second before this clash, but Copy Shop’s Brian Crellin and Ronan McDonnell maintained their 100% averages and combining to harvest the doubles. Arbory’s Mikhail Tamarov, John Magnall and Liam Chan had to be content with wins over Jane Kneale (nee Coulthurst) who has recently returned from honeymoon.
Travellers A 4, Foxdale A 6,
Foxdale secured their first win of the season to stay in 6th place. Becky Bayley and Ruth Bailey losing just one point apiece to Traveller’s Gary Shilling and Paul Nelson respectively. Marc Townsend filched Foxdale’s fifth point by beating the luckless Chris Reynolds and then joined Ruth to take the doubles 11/5, 7/11, 11/4, 16/14 against Reynolds and Shilling.
Strathallan A 7, Copy Shop B 3
Strathy broke their duck and moved up two places to 5th. It was Andy Horne’s 11/9, 8/11, 12/14, 22/20, 12/10 marathon victory over the previously unbeaten Ewan Watterson which proved to be the outstanding match of the night. Watterson went on to beat both Julian Briercliffe and Hadyn McLarney who also lost to Dario Mazzotta. That was it for Copy Shop as McLarney consigned Sean Drewry to a frustratingly pointless night.
DIVISION TWO
Foxdale B 10, Travellers C 0
High flying Foxdale quickly disposed of bottom placed Travellers. Alan Harding was unlucky losing 14/12 in the 4th set to Andy McLarney and then in five sets when in tandem with Juan Moore Snr against Ken Mitchell and Mike Bayley who maintained his unbeaten run in three swift sets against David Buck.
Tower B 8, Peel A 2
Maggie Mulhern and young Ashley Reid blanked out but Malc Lewis spoiled second placed Tower’s hopes of a clean sweep by smashing past Paul Kozlowski and Steve Curtis. Even though Lewis scored more points than Graham McFarlane in their hat-trick decider (50-48), he eventually lost 16/14, 11/1, 8/11, 7/11, 8/11. McFarlane, who celebrated his 75th birthday last week, is yet to lose this season.
Salmon River Spinners 7, Travellers B 3
A Nigel Beattie hat-trick set the Spinners on the right track to beat third placed Travellers. Tommy Cowin followed up with two before losing to Steve Ellis-Pearson who along with Stu Mason edged out Colin Barron. Stu Douglas took Cowin to four sets but could not add a fourth point for Travellers who also lost the doubles.
Peel B 8, Tower C 2
Dave Callow bounced back from a five set defeat against Ashley Reid to take Tower’s two points with wins over Vishal Patel and Matty Evans. Neither Margaret Forsyth nor Heather Kennett could counter Peel’s all out attack for whom Reid impressively won all his matches including the doubles.
DIVISION THREE
Breakaway B 10, Fortress Management Services 0
Top placed Breakaway have only dropped two points all season. Aaron Faragher, Ben Christian and Chris Kewley showed their class by dropping just four sets in total to Mahmoud Hassan, Karen Hassan and Pat Halliwell. Unfortunately, the final score did not reflect the effort put in by Fortress.
Copy Shop C 9, Travellers D 1
Henry Hyde had a real ding dong battle against Juan Moore Snr and had match point in the fourth set before eventually losing 22/20, 5/11, 11/7, 13/15, 6/11. That was Travellers’ only win as Hyde, Rob Sim and the long absent Malcolm Lambert won the remaining singles. Then Sim was ably assisted by Pedro Cordosa in the doubles against the plucky but unlucky pairing of Juan Moore Jnr and Alex Buck.
Copy Shop D 8, IOM Junior Development Two 2
Chris Aspden and Kevin Drewry proved to be too wily for Junior 2 but Calvin Koske made short work of Ollie Cain. Conversely, Marcus Koske had to come back from two sets down to disappoint Cain 5/11, 14/12, 4/11, 11/4, 11/8. However, Cain returned to winning ways against Carl Blatcher. Copy Shop also wrapped up the doubles against Calvin and Marcus.
Peel C 8, IOM Junior Development One 2
James Colgan and Liam Cooper enjoyed pitting their wits against the more experienced Peel team but only Wael Kassim was able to convert enthusiasm to points with excellent wins over Nathan Evans and Fraser Dorling. Vishal Patel had a busy evening, winning all his matches and the doubles as well as playing up for Peel B.
Next week is half-term and a fun doubles competition has been arranged by Maggie Mulhern who has also asked me to remind everybody that league matches must start promptly at 7.00pm. Players practising at the end of an evening should be prepared to concede their table if it is needed for a league match.
