SENIOR LEAGUE 2021-22 WEEK 20

The final match of the penultimate round of matches in the top flight of the Doric Insurance sponsored senior leagues saw what could be a telling victory for the league leaders.

Division 1

Defending champions Lions A struck a decisive blow in the title race as they earned a hard fought 6-4 victory over title rivals Whistlers A, a result that seem them double their advantage at the top to 4 points with just 5 matches left to play. Ben Foss put in a captain's performance on the night as he went unbeaten. This included a 5 set singles win over Josh Stacey and straight sets singles wins over Ryan Gilson and reserve Mark Pipet. He also combined well with Ryan Bichard where the unbeaten doubles combination continued their impressive season record with an important 4 set win over Stacey and Gilson. Bichard was the player to secure the final 2 rubbers on the night and his first win was the most important. He was involved in a mighty tussle with left-hander Gilson, who had led the encounter 2-1 before a strong 4th end in Bichard's favour 11-3. The final end saw match points go both ways before the Lions player edged it 14-12. His other singles win came against Pipet in 4 sets to seal the win. For the defeated Whistlers side Stacey defeated Bichard and Steve Ozanne in 4 sets, whilst Gilson and Pipet both needed to be near their best to edge past Ozanne over the full 5 sets.

3rd placed side Lions B moved to within just 3 points of the Whistlers side after they comfortably beat 4th placed side Whistlers B 7-3. Phil Ogier continues to impress this season with yet another unbeaten evening of singles action. He looked in danger when trailing the player currently in 2nd position in the Division 1 averages Lawrence Stacey 2-0, however as he has done on a number of occasions this season, he battled back strongly and claimed the final 3 ends. His other wins came against Ben Sharp and reserve Matthew Board in straight sets. Liam Robilliard added wins over Sharp and Board, whilst Lions own reserve Chloe Le Tissier defeated Board in straight sets. The doubles match was won by Robilliard and Le Tissier impressively over Stacey and Sharp in straight sets.

The side at the bottom of the table Whistlers C came mightily close to picking up their first victory of the season this week, but were held to a 5-5 draw in the end by 5th placed side Lions C. Paul Hainsworth was back in action for his side and an unbeaten evening helped his Lions side narrowly avoid defeat. He faced a 2-0 deficit in his singles match with Matt Casey but edged the 3rd 12-10 before battling through the final 2 ends. His other singles wins came over Joseph Bourgaize and Ellis Tomlin in straight sets. The doubles rubber was the other match which could have gone the way of the Whistlers side. Casey and Tomlin led the unbeaten doubles pair of Hainsworth and Gill 8-6 in the deciding 5th end, but the Lions players dug deep and reeled off 5 consecutive points to secure the win. It was Gill who picked up the final win for the Lions side when he defeated Tomlin in 4 well contested sets. For the Whistlers side all players picked up singles wins over Charlotte Casey, whilst Casey and Bourgaize earned further singles wins over Gill.

Division 2

League leaders Whistlers D still have a healthy 5 point lead at the top, but they dropped points for the second consecutive week when being held to a 5-5 draw by 5th placed side Lions F. The Lions side were unlucky in the end not to secure a victory as Nye Matthew was defeated 14-12 in the 5th and final set of the final match of the evening to Kay Chivers in a match he had led 2-0 in. Matthew had won his earlier singles matches over Keith Opie and Erin Vaudin and he had also teamed well with Jayden Tucknott to overcome Chivers and Opie in 4 sets in the doubles match. Tucknott and reserve Terry Trustum secured the other wins over Vaudin. Chivers won her other singles matches in straight sets over Trustum and Tucknott, a feat which was matched by Opie for the league leaders.

St Pauls A and Lions B both took full advantage of the slip with each earning narrow 6-4 wins.

The St Pauls side beat 6th place side Lions E in a match where Chas Elliott and Maurice James each earned singles wins over Jonah Ingrouille and Connor Powell. Trevor Bourgaize also beat Powell and teamed with James to win the crucial doubles rubber over Ingrouille and Powell in 4 sets. None of the St Pauls players could test averages leader Jez Powell and Ingrouille earned himself a a 4 set win over Bourgaize too.

The Lions side on the other hand edged past 4th placed side Ravenscroft Panthers A this week. Luke Le Tissier returned to his side in good form as he beat Sam Kershaw, Richard Edwards and Ben Foote without dropping a set. Sister Chloe beat Kershaw, whilst Shelby Timms beat Edwards. Le Tissier and Timms teamed up to win the all important doubles match against Foote and Kershaw in straight sets to seal the win.

Division 3

Ravenscroft Panthers B continue to be the dominant force in the 3rd Division after another crushing victory this week. They are unbeaten in 23 matches and have a comfortable 5 point lead at the top and this week St Pauls B were put to the sword 9-1. The team of Shaun Mosley, Steve Martin and Richard Edwards were in control during their matches against Derek Carter, John Wills and Brian Le Cras, with just Carter managing to salvage a win over Martin in 4 sets on the night. He did come close to another victory but was edged out by Mosley who battled back from 2-1 down to win over the full 5 sets in the last match of the evening.

Division 4

League leaders Lions K had their lead at the top reduced to 3 points following a 5-5 draw with the side at the bottom of the table, Whistlers H. Whilst it may seem a surprise result with the bottom side earning a draw with the top of the table side, the Lions side were missing averages leader Jenny Powell and the Whistlers side had a strong reserve in the form of Robert Naftel. These 2 factors enabled the Whistlers side to earn the surprise result. Naftel defeated Helen Barker and Cameron Powell in 5 sets before defeating Lions reserve Roland Tracums in straight sets. Naftel also teamed with reserve Morgan Mountford as they defeated Powell and Barker in 4 sets in the doubles rubber. The final win for the Whistlers side came for Mountford as he earned an impressive 5 set win over Barker, 13-11 in the deciding end.
