Serial winners Karina Le Fevre and Chris Doran were again the champions on day two of the Cleveland Grand Prix.

Thornaby Pavilion was the venue and after a busy day one, day two was sure to have a few shocks along the way.

Women’s Singles

Top seed and local girl Karina Le Fevre  took the title in style, defeating Sarah Mengistab (Middlesex) 3-1 (9-11, 11-8, 11-2, 11-3), Kate Roberts (Wales) 3-0 (11-4, 11-5, 11-7), Lucy Elliott (Scotland) 3-0 (11-3, 11-4, 11-5), Isabelle Doyle (Cleveland) 3-0 (11-3, 11-2, 11-1), Katherine Le Fevre (Cleveland) 3-0 (11-4, 11-4, 11-2) and Amy Webster (Cleveland) 3-0 (11-1, 11-5, 11-1) to secure her third Grand Prix title of the season.

Mengistab was a worthy runner-up with wins over Roberts 3-1 (9-11, 11-8, 12-10, 12-10), Elliott 3-0 (11-7, 11-5, 11-2), Doyle 3-0 (11-3, 11-4, 11-6), Katherine Le Fevre 3-1 (9-11, 11-4, 11-3, 11-5) and Webster.

Men’s Singles

Chris Doran secured his second Grand Prix title of season 2017-2018, defeating Victor Shi Guang 3-2 (11-13, 11-8, 11-8, 12-14, 11-2) in a thrilling final. Chris looked to have things wrapped up in the fourth set only for Victor to battle hard to get back into it. However Chris still had an extra gear to win the match.

In the semi-finals, Guang defeated Graeme Barella (Durham) 3-1 (10-12, 11-8, 11-3, 11-7) and Doran who accounted for James Hobson (Yorkshire) 3-1 (11-7, 11-7, 6-11, 11-4).

In the quarter-finals, Doran defeated Chun Yin Yu (Northumberland) 3-1 (10-12, 15-13, 11-5, 11-7), Hobson had a straightforward win over Edan Regan (Cornwall) 3-0 (11-7, 13-11, 11-4), Guang battled hard to defeat Joe Clark (Cleveland) 3-1 (4-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-6) and Barella caused a shock by defeating Niall Cameron (Scotland) 3-1 (8-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-6).

In the first round, Doran defeated Thomas Rayner (Cleveland) 3-1 (5-11, 11-2, 11-6, 11-8), who had earlier scored an excellent win against Cameron in the group stage.

Chun Yin Yu defeated Joseph Goss (Norfolk) 3-1 (9-11, 11-4, 11-7, 11-5), Edan Regan beat Olly Tyndall (Gloucester) 3-1 (11-6, 11-9, 3-11, 14-12) and Hobson overcame Jacob Goss (Norfolk) 3-0 (11-4, 11-8, 11-9). Guang defeated Sam Wilson (Northampton), while Clark was involved in a five-set battle against Zhan Jian Zhang (Cleveland), winning 3-2 (11-6, 8-11, 10-12, 11-7, 11-8). Barella defeated Kyan Chin (Lancashire) 3-1 (11-5, 11-9, 8-11, 11-2) and Cameron defeated Ryan Owen (Wales) 3-1 (8-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-6).

Veterans’ Singles

Rory Scott (Ireland) was the winner, defeating Kyan Chin (Lancashire) in a hard-fought final with Rory winning 3-2 (11-9, 5-11, 14-12, 11-13, 11-8). This was the first time Rory had scored a victory over Kyan in three attempts, which makes it even sweeter as Rory was under the weather.

In the semi-finals, Rory had a straightforward victory over Nigel Savage (Cleveland) 3-0 (11-4, 11-6, 11-4) and Chin battled hard to defeat Gary Whyman (Cleveland) 3-1 (11-9, 12-14, 13-11, 11-7).

Under-21 Men’s Singles

James Hobson (Yorkshire) was the winner as he defeated player of the weekend Thomas Rayner (Cleveland) in an excellent final. James was able to mix his defence into attack to entertain the crowd at the end of a long weekend, winning the match 3-1 (4-11, 11-6, 11-5, 12-10).

In the semi-finals, Hobson was involved a titanic battle with Jordan Wykes (Jersey), coming back from 0-2 to win the match 3-2 (7-11, 8-11, 11-4, 11-7, 11-5). Rayner got the better of Zak Cantor (Lancashire).

With great support from Grantham Academy and Ormesby TTC the atmosphere was electric and both players put on a great match. In the end it was success for Thomas, winning 3-2 (11-7, 11-8, 16-18, 3-11, 11-8).

In the quarter-finals, Hobson had to dig deep to overcome the ever-improving Louis Price 3-2 (12-10, 11-9, 9-11, 7-11, 11-3). Wykes defeated Jacob Goss (Norfolk) 3-0 (12-10, 11-1, 11-8) and Cantor defeated Will Dobinson (Cleveland) 3-0 (11-2, 11-4, 11-5). Rayner battled past Sam Wilson (Northampton) to win 3-2 (12-10, 7-11, 11-9, 12-14, 11-7).

In the preliminary rounds Price had to battle back from 0-2 down to overcome David Gofton (Cleveland) 3-2 (8-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-9, 13-11) and Wilson defeated Joseph Goss (Norfolk) 3-1 to progress (9-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9).

Under-21 Women’s Singles

Jannah Elkhawanky secured the title by defeating Kate Roberts (Wales) in the final 3-0 (11-8, 11-2, 11-7).

Jannah scored an excellent win over top seed Holly Hinder (Sussex) in the semi-finals, winning it 3-2 (11-8, 7-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-9), while Roberts defeated Sophie Barlow (Cleveland) 3-1 (11-7, 11-5, 8-11, 11-2) in the other semi.

Open Doubles

George Falcus & Tom Miller were the open doubles winners in the final event as they were victorious over Jemal Muhamed & Stephen Tuck, Ben Kelly & David Kelly and Daniel Ferguson & Bailey Pye. Runners-up was Muhamed & Tuck.
