Quartet target ping-pong glory

Twice champion Andrew Baggaley leads a quartet of English players in the World Championships of Ping Pong line-up.

The Milton Keynes ace took the crown at Alexandra Palace in 2014 and 2015 and will be looking to get the trophy back after bowing out in the last 16 at the hands of Slovakia’s Lubomir Pistej last year.

Chris Doran, who reached the quarter-finals last year, has also qualified, while Matt Ware and Martin Gunn complete the English contingent, both having also competed last year.

Scotland’s Gavin Rumgay and Mike Marsden of Wales are also in the line-up.

The competition is on January 27 and 28 and last year’s winner and runner-up – Yan Weihao of China and Germany’s Alexander Flemming – will be the top two seeds.

The ?rst round consists of eight groups of eight players played on a double elimination basis, meaning two straight wins will qualify a player for the last 32 while two straight defeats will spell elimination. The ?nal set of matches in the group will feature players with one win and one defeat competing to stay in the competition.

Following the double elimination stage, the draw for the last 32 and beyond will be made.
