History Boys! YG Zander complete the triple crown to make league history

The all dominating YG Zander have successfully raided the Wandsworth Table Tennis League’s trophy cabinet and won everything they have entered. The squad captained by Cain Fagan have won the 1st Division League title, the Presidents Cup and the Ian McCarthy Shield (formerly the Chairmans Cup). They are officially the first team to win all 3 titles in the same season in the history of the league. Laikram Persaud was the outstanding individual player coming top of the players averages, but was closely followed by Cain Fagan and Steve Fagan (Cain’s dad). The team is named "YG Zander" after York Gardens TTC and the late mastermind behind so many of York Gardens famous victories - Nevile Hall who sadly passed away last year. Neville's middle name was Zander so the team is a strong representative of Neville's determination of always striving for excellence.

In the Presidents Cup Final which brought the season to a close it was an exciting and high-level match against Vale A, which Zander won 5 – 1, but as so often happens the score line does not reflect the true closeness of the encounter. Andy Sanders was Vale’s only winner beating Cain Fagan. The stand out match of the night was between Laikram Persaud and Andy Sanders with Laikram coming out on top winning 12-10 in the 5th set. The match scores were as follows: W Czubek vs L Persaud 8-11, 5-11, 3-11. A Sanders vs C Fagan 11-7, 11-9, 5-11, 11-5. D Taucher vs S Fagan 7-11, 8-11, 8-11. A Sanders vs L Persaud 9-11, 11-2, 12-14, 11-9, 10-12. W Czubek vs S Fagan 7-11, 8-11, 9-11. D Taucher vs C Fagan 9-11, 5-11, 3-11.    The matches were filmed and can be seen by clicking here Wandsworth Table Tennis Channel on YouTube or go to the Gallery on this website

Cup News:  YG Zander beat Vale A in tense Ian McCarthy Shield Final

This year saw history being made as YG Zander became the first winners of the Ian McCarthy Shield (formerly the Chairmans Cup) and are on their way to winning all 3 league competitions of the division 1 league championship, the Presidents Cup and they now hold Ian McCarthy Shield. It wasn't all plain sailing as Vale A put up a strong challenge winning the first 2 matches and almost snatched a third. There was a genuine tension in the encounter between the two teams and some terrific table tennis. The rock for Zander as he has been all season was Laikram Persaud who was unbeaten on the night.  Match of the final was Laikram's win over Doug Taucher 11-10 in the 5th set as the match was decided on the exciting "sudden death" rule where if the score reaches 10 all the next point decides the game. For Vale their surprise package was the the "evergreen" Ron Brown who will soon be 75 but managed to win the second match against Cain Fagan.
