Stratford Herald Week Beginning January 22nd

Snitterfield have gained a slight edge in the league title race following the latest round of matches. The table toppers defeated Blazing Paddles 7-3 with John Price and Alan Cotton untroubled. Don McAdam was unlucky not to add to their haul after taking the lead against both Harry Azima and Chris Dickens before  narrowly losing out in the only games to go the full distance.
Shottery A followed their usual practice of commencing play with the doubles when they entertained their own B team. However that plan looked to have backfired when Gary Stewart and Stephen Foster won just four points in the first set but they managed to turn the contest around to give their team the early advantage. Stewart and Rob Poole recorded braces for the senior side, with Foster earning their crucial sixth point in the only game to go to the wire where he took the honours against Tim Fell. The most competitive encounter, which produced a succession of entertaining counter-hitting rallies, saw Foster narrowly lose out to Gareth Hepworth. The second string's other successes were all earned by Awais Muhammed who was unfortunate to be on the losing side after delivering an excellent unbeaten singles performance.
It was more one-sided when Shottery A were again in action at Ashorne where Graham Poole, Stewart and Foster gained a comprehensive 10-0 win without the loss of a set.
Also inflicting a whitewash were JLM Falcons who fielded a strong side for their visit to Veterans. Jack Davis, Kevin Taylor and Stef Mytton were all undefeated, although Mytton was made to work hard by David Wye who, in the only game to go to a decider, took an early lead before losing out.
Mick Welsh and Tim Lawrence recorded trebles for Tanworth Taipans when they defeated Ashorne 8-2. Mike Saunders added a brace with both successes achieved over the full distance. However he was unable to overcome Jim Jack who also partnered Roger Pye to secure the doubles.
Henley A had only two available players but felt unable to call up reinforcements from their B team as it was they who were the opposition! The senior side was therefore represented just by Geoff Shephard and Peter Quince, with Quince’s victory over Mark Chase providing their only score. Stuart Latham-Marr and Robert McCluskey were undefeated, and Chase added Henley B’s other singles as well as successfully partnering McCluskey in the doubles.
