Week 9 Report Winter League 21-22 P2

WEEK 9 REPORT, PART 2 OF WINTER LEAGUE 21/22

Premier Division

Sadly, there was just 1 match played in the Premier Division this week. This saw Rayleigh Mill take on a strong Rawreth A. To make matters worse, the Millers could only muster 2 players, Captain Rob Harris, and ever reliable Colin Chatfield. Rawreth turned out a very strong side of Yasir & Zayd Mauthoor and evergreen George Reeves. Colin got the better of George and that’s where it ended with Rawreth running out 8-1 winners

Division 1

A captain’s innings (to mix my metaphors) this week from Brand Identity B’s Barrie Delf. Barrie’s unbeaten performance, in his team’s visit to Stanford Le Hope A, ensured a narrow 5 – 4 away win for his side. Colleagues Adam Jackman and Jenny Harrison chipped in with one win apiece. Adam was particularly unfortunate going down twice in the fifth set by 11/8. For the home side, Peter Weatherall and Dave Hancox each won two.

Despite a POM hat trick from home side Mapledene’s Charles Yeung, a 5 – 4 away success was also managed by Lentern B. Dawn Baldry got Mapledene’s other success whilst, unusually, there was no wins for Lin Roff. Lentern can thank Gus Heath and veteran John Tendler with two wins each together with Pauls Sims’ single victory for getting their side across the line. (I know – wrong metaphor again!).

Hat tricks from POM Tony Millward and Dmitry Kisil, backed up by two wins from Phil Digby, saw Runnymede C comfortable 8 – 1 away winners at Canvey A. Terry Giddens got the home side’s consolation point.

Despite an admin error depriving Invicta A of a third player, a very close match ensued against visiting Hockley C. Tony Ayliffe was the home side’s star again, taking the POM award for winning all his matches. However, wins from Aaryan Vatsa and Joerg Poeschus gave Hockley the victory. Alan Strawford won Invicta’s other point and was unfortunate to lose 11/8 in the fifth to Aaryan in the deciding rubber.

Hadleigh Forum C were too strong for the two youngsters Rawreth D mustered. Harrison Creek and Max Samuels should be praised for their attitude and sportsmanship. Nevertheless, Forum added nine points to their tally for the season.

The match between Ashingdon and Hadleigh Forum B was postponed.

Division 2

Wakering have made a significant move in Division 2 playing and winning two games this week which has moved them up to second in the table, still some way behind the leaders RESSC but six points ahead of third placed Stanford B.

Their first win was a routine 9-0 crushing of Hockley D, Zac England, Paul England and Stewart Mills not conceding a set all night. The second, and more significant win, came with a surprisingly straightforward 7-2 win against then second in the table Stanford B. Zac, Paul and Stewart were again the men in form although Robert Salvage picked up both points for Stanford beating Paul and Stewart.

Leaders RESSC might have expected a closer match when they took on Canvey B, who have been in good form this season, but this hugely experienced team took no prisoners running out 9-0 winners. The only hint of defeat for anyone came in the match between Bob Skews and Daniel Kellard which went the full five sets with Bob winning the decider in convincing style 11/3. All the other games were won in straight sets Mike Worship and Richard Gill making up the winning team.

At the other end of the table Hockley D’s week didn’t get any better as they slumped to another 9-0 defeat against Stanford C. There were eight straight set wins for Mark Farley, Steve King and Jake Santiago the only hint of that changing coming in the match between Jake and Alwine Jarvis which he eventually won 11/7 in the fifth set.

This defeat leaves Hockley bottom of the table as Invicta C picked up two points against Hockley E which leaves them level on points with Hockley D but having played less games.

Invicta’s match could have been closer as they came out worse in two of the three games that went to five sets. Dave Cross and Tony Molisso were the men in form for Hockley winning all their games whilst Ben Brown picked up the other point. Keith Baxter and Jonathan Gould got the points for Invicta.

Invicta’s B team just edged a closely fought encounter with Canvey C 5-4 the match being decided in the last game of the evening, Mike Keeble overcoming Steve Parker in straight sets. Steve Lennox was the POTM for Invicta however with Sarah Ball providing the other point. Tony Westwell and Ray Baker both won two games for Canvey.

Brand Identity may have unearthed a new talent in Szymon Jarka who followed up a fine performance against Wakering last week with a hat trick against Stanford D. With Jenne Seibolt matching him and Andy Roff weighing in with two wins it led to an easy 8-1 win. Mark Downey got the consolation point for Stanford with a five set win over Andy.

The final game of the week saw a very welcome return to action for Customs who have had all sorts of venue problems this season but played for the first time in some weeks and chalked up a deserved 6-3 win against Hadleigh Forum D. Richard Kidd and Amar El Soufi both won all their games with Breda Kidd finding the going a bit tougher against Debbie O’Neil, Jeff Gritzman and Sineh Ball.
