Week 12 Report Winter League 21-22

Sdttl Winter League 2021-2 Week 12

Premier Division

It was a second loss in 2 weeks for our defending champions Thorpe Bay A this week as they went down by the barest of margins 5-4 to Hockley A. Andy Cunningham again the star of the show for Hockley with three wins over Mark Stones, Joe Kennedy and Kieran Skeggs. Matt Stringer and Tim Pang chipped in with good wins against Stones and Skeggs respectively to take the win.

In the Hullbridge derby it was, as you might expect, the A team of Liam Squirrell, Arron Chandler and Harry Keys that came out on top 7-2 over their B side. Maximum wins for Squirrell and Keys with Kim Shead and Daniel Zeffie beating Chandler for the consolation points.

It was a heavy defeat this week for Hadleigh Forum A as they went down 8-1 to Brand Identity A. Simon Jacob and Richard Jackman both took hattricks while David Jacob recorded two wins just missing out to Hamish Innes in 5 sets.

The final game this week saw a good win for Rayleigh Mill over Irons A. Duncan Taylor won his three games as did Sam Lowman who was making his season debut for the Millers. The final score was 7-2 as both Richard Brown and Dave Bowles beat Steve Sawyer.

The “derby” match between Hadleigh Forum’s B and C teamsprovided an upset for the form book, with the C team overcoming the B team 5 – 4. Paul Fawell was too good for his higher-rated colleagues, being unbeaten all evening for a well-deserved Player of the Match award. The B team’s skipper Dave Woolmer put in a captain’s performance winning two for his side, with Mick Tappenden and Tony Jacks recording one win a-piece. Graham Farmer and Satwant Gill each won one to seal the C team’s victory.

A totally unexpected hat trick from David Barnes was sadly not enough to give Invicta A victory when they visited Rawreth C. In previous reports it has been a feature that Chris Aukett had unbeaten matches, but still ended up on the losing side. This time, ironically, Chris lost his unbeaten record to David, but his team got a 5 - 4 victory. Chris and Colin Barham won two each and Adam Hill got their other rubber. Invicta’s John Blackman got his side’s other success.

Brand Identity B were not able to return to winning ways this week. Visitors Hockley B were comfortable 7 – 2 winners, maintaining their unbeaten record. The unassailable Andy Cunningham was again untouchable, taking all his matches and (again) the POM award. Dan Patynski, more used to the Premier Division, also won his three matches, although he was hard pushed by the home side’s Adam Jackman, eventually winning 14 – 12 in the fifth set. Dave Chenery recorded Hockley’s other success. Adam and Barrie Delf got one each for the home team.

Mapledene and Stanford Le Hope A were involved in a close encounter, with home side Mapledene coming out on top by 5 – 4. Peter Weatherall was POM with an unbeaten performance which, alas, didn’t stop Stanford losing. Russell Bright got their other win. Bill Smith and Lin Roff did the damage with two wins each for Mapledene and Dawn Baldry surprisingly only managing a single.

Lentern B were too strong for Hockley C, winning 7 - 2. Hat tricks from POM Paul Sims and Ian Cranstone ensured success, whilst Wayne Farmer chipped in with two victories. Joerg Poeschus recorded Hockley’s only win, although he went all the way with Ian, eventually succumbing 15 – 13 in the fifth set. In a similar vein, Ollie George was unfortunate to lose out 12 – 10 in the fifth to Paul.

Visitors Canvey A overcame home side Rawreth D 7 – 2. Noah Unstead and Charlie Kauders-Boothby recorded creditable successes for Rawreth, but maximums from Ray Wilson and POM Andy Murray made it comfortable for Canvey. Terry Giddens got Canvey’s other win.

7 – 2 seems a popular score this week. Hockley D also beat Ashingdon by this score. POM Paul Henlen and Aaryan Vatsa recorded maximums, with Ben Cook adding one win. Alex Bowden and Evie Knaapen each won one for Ashingdon.

Division 2

No doubt about the player or team of the week in Division 2 this week as Customs chalked up their very first win of the season and it came with the help of a hat trick from Emily Kidd playing in her very first match of the season!

The week had not started well for Customs as they went down 9-0 to the all conquering RESSC side of Ron Coutts, Robert Skews and Mike Worship with just one match going beyond three sets. Richard Kidd extended Ron to five sets in the first match of the evening eventually losing the final set 11/6 but after that it was all plain sailing for the away side.

Customs second match of the week, however, will hopefully prove to be a turning point in their fortunes being a 5-4 win against Invicta C. Emily’s hat trick was backed up by two wins for Amar Al-Soufi but Emily’s mum Breda was out of luck on the night. Key match was Emily’s five set win over Keith Baxter coming back from 2-1 down to give Customs a 5-3 winning lead.

Whilst RESSC’s win keeps them top of the table Wakeringmaintained the pressure in second place winning 8-1 at Stanford C to leave them just one point behind. Zac England was in fine form not dropping a set all night whilst Stewart Mills also recorded a hat trick and Peter Sarfras added the other two. Steve King got the consolation point for Stanford.

Stanford B also missed out this week but were only just beaten 5-4 by Runnymede C who now sit third albeit having played one game more than the top two. Dmitri Kisil was the POTM winning a crucial match against Saad Abdullah 11/9 in the fifth set having led 2-0 at one stage. Phil Digby provided the backing with two wins whilst Rob Salvage did best for Stanford winning twice including a fine five set win against Phil again with an 11/9 finish in the final set. Stanford have dropped to 6th in the table but have games in hand on all the teams above them.

Lewis Pattle was in fine form for Canvey C as they overcame Hadleigh Forum D 6-3. His hat trick was supported by a brace from Ray Baker and one win from Simon Piggot. David Thomas was Forum’s best performer on the night and his match against Lewis the closest. He lost 9/11 11/9 11/6 8/11 11/9. Canvey sit fourth but eight points behind Runnymede.

Invicta B produced a good all round performance to beat Hockley E 6-3 Mike Keeble, Sarah Ball and Steve Lennox each winning two games whilst Dave Cross with two wins and Ron Rogerson with one, scored the points for Hockley. Hockley actually led 2-0 thanks to a five set comeback win for Ron against Sarah being 2-0 down initially, but then Sarah more than made up for that fighting off a comeback from Dave to beat him in five sets. Just to achieve a different sort of hat trick Sarah then won another five set match, this time coming back from 2-1 down against Alwine Jarvis before cruising home 11/2 in the fifth.
