Week 8 Report Winter League 21-22 P2

WEEK 8 REPORT, PART 2 OF WINTER LEAGUE 21/22

Premier Division

This week saw just 3 matches played. Rawreth B had a close encounter with Brand Identity A, just edging it at 5-4. For the home side Captain Eric Green was unbeaten throughout, well supported by Babul McLeod with a brace. Tim Cramphorn did not have a good night not adding to his Teams score, while Simon Jacob did well to beat Babul and Tim for his brace, with David Jacob & Richard Jackman gaining a point each.

Rawreth A proved far too strong for a 2 player Irons A side with popular stalwarts John Monk and Richard Brown failing to score a point, leaving Kevin Read, Yasir Mauthoor & Liam Squirrel all unbeaten.

The final match in this Division this week saw a strong Irons B side of Dan Zeffie, Kim Shead & Norbert Fullerton prove too strong for Rayleigh A: apart from Millers Duncan Taylor, who was undefeated on the night.

It was a busy and successful week for Hadleigh Forum’s David Woolmer. On Thursday night he turned in a POM hat trick performance for his Forum B side, in their 8 – 1 home win over Stanford Le Hope A. Teammates Tony Jacks (with a maximum) and Mick Tappenden (with two) made sure the win was comfortable. Peter Weatherall got the visitor’s only victory.

The very next night David ‘guested’ for Forum C in a very comfortable 9 – 0 away victory over Runnymede C. David was again unbeaten. However, because he dropped one set to Runnymede’s Tina Hutchinson in the first contest of the evening, the POM award was denied him, and instead went to the C team captain Graham Farmer. Mark Everard was the other Forum player to score a hat trick.

Tony Ayliffe was again Invicta A’s only player to trouble the scorer, winning both points in a 7 – 2 away defeat to Hockley B. Keith Abbott’s three wins ensured he was Player of the Match, and teammates David Chenery and Stuart Adshead got two wins each.

There was an impressive 8 – 1 away win for Mapledene when they visited Hockley C. However, this score line hides some very close games which, on another night, might have led to a much closer result. Young Oliver George was in front twice against Andy Seaman and Mike Johnston, but each time a 2-1 lead finished in a five-set defeat. Joerg Poeschus did extremely well to come back from two sets down and beat Charles Yeung for Hockley's consolation point, but suffered that fate himself as he succumbed to Andy in five big hitting sets. Sadly, there was no joy this week for the Hockley veteran Paul Strutt.

Unfortunately, the two other matches scheduled for this week had to be postponed due to unavailability of players.

Canvey B pulled off an important win in Division 2 this week as they beat second placed Stanford B 6-3 to close the gap between themselves and Stanford to just two points. The match was a personal success for Stanford’s Robert Salvage who won all his games against Daniel Kellard, Tony Westwell and Lee McGonagle but his team mates Mark Farley and John Handscombe couldn’t match his performance. Salvage’s win against Kellard was significant in that it was Daniel’s first defeat in this half of the season and he had only, in fact, lost just one set up to this point.

Pushing Robert hard for player of the week was Emily Kidd of Customs who made a rare appearance for her club this week and, alongside mum and dad Breda and Richard, helped them to a 7-2 win against Invicta C. Their first win of this half of the season. Richard also won his games, albeit Invicta were hindered by the absence of a third player.

The all conquering RESSC side won again 8-1 against Canvey Cwhich sees them six points clear of Stanford with a game in hand. The consolation point for Canvey came from Des Duffield who came from two sets down to beat Ron Coutts 11/9 in the deciding set. Richard Gill and Bob Skews made up the winning team.

Fifth placed Wakering met fourth placed Brand Identity C and ran out 7-2 winners to close the gap between them to one point but with a game in hand. Zac England led the way with a hat trick, dropping just one set on the night, and team mates Pete Sarfras and Stewart Mills weighed in with two wins apiece. Debutant Szymon Jarka did well to win two games for Brand and you have to have some sympathy for Richard Reibold who lost to both Pete and Stewart in five sets and also took the one set off Zac.

The clash between mid table sides Hadleigh Forum D and Invicta B resulted in a 7-2 win for the Forum with regulars Tony Mace and David Thomas both recording hat tricks and Jean Catley getting her point with a win against Sarah Ball. Steve Lennox and Mike Keeble got the points for Invicta.

Hockley D remain without a win this season but there were some improved performances in their 7-2 defeat to Stanford D. Alwine Jarvis picked up two wins, both in five sets, against David Arnett and Peter Moxham with Hermann Maier adding a further point. Graham Gregory was unlucky not to add more points losing two of his matches in five sets. Mark Downey was the POTM however winning his three games and he was supported by Peter who won two points and David Arnett who won one. Stanford now sit in 11th place well clear of the three bottom clubs.
