Week 7 Report Winter League 21-22 P2

WEEK 7 REPORT, PART 2 OF WINTER LEAGUE 21/22

Division 1

The youngsters of Rawreth D accredited themselves well when they took the long trip to Stanford Le Hope A. Stanford’s Dave Hancox was unbeaten to take the POM award, whilst teammates Chris Crooks and Saad Abdullah won two each to take the match 7 – 2. However, Charlie Kauders Boothby and George Davis should be complimented on taking the scalps of Chris and Saad respectively.

A strong Hockley B threesome was too good for visiting Brand Identity B. Andy Cunningham was again not troubled on his way to a maximum and the Player of the Match award. Daniel Patynski chipped in with two home successes, narrowly losing 11 – 7 in the fifth set to the visitor’s David Jacob. David J also got the better of the home side’s David Chenery, whilst David C and Identity’s Barrie Delf won one each to give Hockley a 6 – 3 victory.

Another Ray Wilson hat trick was the foundation of a 5 – 4 home victory for Canvey A over Hockley C, despite that his side only having two players. Canvey’s Andy Murray lost out to Hockley’s Joerg Poeschus, but overcame both Paul Strutt and Brian Bissenden.

There was a convincing 8 – 1 away win for Lentern B when they visited Hadleigh Forum C. POM Ian Cranstone and Gus Heath both recorded maximums, whilst John Tendler, returning to his former club, succumbed to Forum’s David Woolmer, but was otherwise victorious.

The match between Invicta A and Mapledene saw a very close encounter that eventually decided who would take the POM prize. Invicta’s Tony Ayliffe fell two sets down against Lin Roff, then took the next two to draw level at two sets all. However, Lin held her nerve to take the final set (and the plaudits) in a close 12–10 fifth set win. Tony got the better of both Mapledene’s Mike Johnston and Steve Woodley and the home side’s Alan Strawford also overcame Steve. However, Lin’s three victories and two from Mike and one from Steve gave Mapledene a 6 – 3 away win.

The match between Ashingdon and Runnymede C was postponed.

Week 7

No doubt about the surprise result of the week in Division 2 with Wakering pulling off a crushing 9-0 win against second in the table Canvey B. A close game would have been expected from these two teams and in many respects it was, four games going to five sets, but every time it was the team of Stewart Mills, Pete Sarfras and Paul England that came out on top. Des Duffield was particularly unlucky for the Islanders all his games going to five sets whilst Jo Hills and Tony Westwell battled hard but without joy. This win pushes Wakering up one place to fifth in the table whilst Canvey drop to third. Stewart took the POTM award.

It was a bad week all round for the Canvey teams as their C teamwere beaten 8-1 by Stanford B who have now moved up to second in the table. Kevin Walsingham took Vaughan Chambers to five sets but apart from that the Stanford team of Vaughan, Robert Salvage and Peter Moxham met little resistance.

Another straightforward win in the match between Brand Identity C and Hockley D as the home team cruised to a 9-0 victory. Hockley almost salvaged a point in the last game of the evening when Alwine Jarvis led by two sets against Richard Reibold, but he responded well winning the last three sets 11/7 12/10 11/8. Ash Sivanandam and Ross Letham made up the winning team both claiming perfect hat tricks.

Invicta’s B and C teams met to determine who holds the bragging rights at the club and it was the B team who came out on top 7-2. A Mike Keeble hat trick and two each from Sarah Ball and Steve Lennox did the damage and there was a consolation win each for Brendan Raja and Dave Youngman.

Hockley E overcame Stanford D 6-3 thanks to a hat trick from Paul Ogden, in a rare appearance for the team, and a second successive hat trick from Tony Molisso. Paul did not drop a set all night, but Tony did have to fight to overcome Mark Downey eventually winning a rollercoaster match 8/11 11/9 13/15 14/12 11/6.
