Week 6 Report Winter League 21-22 P2

WEEK 6 REPORT, PART 2 OF WINTER LEAGUE 21/22

Premier Division

Weeks 6 & 7

Five results to bring you from the Premier Division of the Southend league. This report covers games from weeks 6 & 7 of the season.

Mixed fortunes for Rayleigh Mill as they recorded a good 5-4 win over Irons A but only after suffering an 8-1 defeat against Hockley A. In the victory over Irons A it was Colin Chatfield who took the man of the match award for his three wins and he was backed up by a win a piece by Rob Harris and Steve Maltby. In contrast it was just a two man Millers side who played against a Hockley A side for whom Tim Pang and Daniel Patynski went unbeaten with a good consolation win for Steve Sawyer over Matt Stringer.

The other team in action twice was Thorpe Bay A and they followed up a good 6-3 win over Rawreth B with a thumping 9-0 victory over their own Thorpe Bay B side. In the win against the Rawreth side there were 2 wins each for Paul Sayer, Gurj Bhambra and Mark Stones with the Rawreth wins coming from Babul McLeod (2) and Bruce Kettle (1). His two wins gave Bhambra the man of the match award a great achievement as he was playing up for the A team but it was back down to earth with a bump as he returned to be part of the Thorpe Bay B side that suffered a whitewash from Thorpe Bay A. Bhambra’s colleagues that night were  Keith Willett and Richard Stubbington and for the victors it was again Sayer and Stones but this time they were joined by the hard hitting Paul Whatton.

The final result to bring you was Brand Identity 2 v Rawreth A 7.  Yasir Mauthoor taking the man of the match award with three wins but special mention must go to Simon Jacob who replied with Brand Identity’s two wins over George Reeves and Zayd Mauthoor.

Division 1

Sadly, this week two fixtures – Brand Identity B vs. Invicta A and Lentern B vs. Ashingdon had to be postponed.

Heavyweights Mapledene and Canvey A slogged it out in a close match at Mapledene. The visitors came out on top with a 5 – 4 points victory. Ray Wilson was Canvey’s hero winning all his contests. He was well supported by Andy Murray who had two wins. For Mapledene, Steve Woodley won two and Charles Yeung and Mike Johnston one each.

Hockley C recorded their biggest win of the season in their home match against Hadleigh Forum C. Ollie George and Joerg Poeschus both recorded hat tricks, although both were fully extended to five sets by the visitors’ Satwant Gill. Joerg, in particular, lost the first two sets to Satwant. However, a change of tactics saw him storm back to take the last three sets. Mark Everard saved Forum’s blushes with a consolation victory over Brian Bissenden in an 8 – 1 home landslide.

Satwant and Joerg were then in action against each other the following night, playing up, when Hadleigh Forum B hosted Hockley B. It was Forum B’s turn this week to suffer team shortages, only being able to field two players for this match. Despite the best efforts of the home side’s Mick Tappenden and Satwant, hat tricks from Hockley’s Keith Abbott, Dave Colwill and Joerg gave them a 9 – 0 win that was far from as straight forward as the score suggests.

Division 2

Surprise result of the week in Division 2 was the Friday night match between third placed Stanford B and mid table Hadleigh Forum D fielding a much changed side of Vaughan Chambers, Andrew Jessop and David Arness Stanford were beaten 6-3 David Thomas leading the way for Forum with a perfect hat trick, with Jean Catley adding two wins and one for Debbie O’Neil. Jean came very near, in fact, to winning all three of her games leading Vaughan 2-1 before succumbing in five sets. Vaughan finished with two wins and Andrew, one, for Stanford.

Stanford’s defeat was compounded by Canvey B’s 9-0 crushing of Brand Identity C which has pushed the Islanders into second place and three points clear of Stanford. Brand Identity were unlucky not to get at least one point however, three matches going to five sets. Andy Roff twice missed out and Richard Reibold once. Desmond Duffield, Tony Westwell and Lee McGonagle were the winning combination for Canvey.

Leaders RESSC couldn’t have had an easier night against an Invicta C side reduced to two men. They won 9-0 not conceding a set all night. Ron Coutts, Mike Worship and Bob Skews doing the honours. They are now six points clear of Canvey B.

A lack of players also effected Invicta’s B team who could only field two against Stanford C. Mark Farley and Steve King were in fine form for Stanford as they raced into a 5-0 lead but Steve Lennox (two wins) and Mike Keeble (one) meant it finished 6-3 overall. Mark and Steve also finished with two wins and one, respectively.

Canvey are taking full advantage of players flexibility this season. Their C team’s match against Wakering saw Daniel Kellard and Lee McGonagle step down from the B team and both won two games but were just edged out 5/4 overall. Ray Baker found the Wakering team of Zac England, Stewart Mills and Pete Sarfras a little too strong. Zac’s hat trick was the key to the win with a point each for Stewart and Pete.

There were wins all round in the Hockley derby between the D and E teams everyone winning at least one game as the E team triumphed 6-3 overall. It was good to see Tony Molisso, who has spent a long time away from the game, record his first hat trick since returning to play. He dropped just one set all night. Dave Cross picked up two wins and Ben Cook the final point for the E team whilst John George, Keith Denyer and Hermann Maier shared the points for the D team.
