WEEK 5 REPORT, PART 2 OF WINTER LEAGUE 21/22

DIVISION 1

A shortage of players for Hadleigh Forum C saw them draft in B team player Mick Tappenden and Tony Mace from the D team for the visit of Mapledene. Mick was able to contribute two victories. Regular C team player Satwant Gill got one in a marathon five-setter against Charles Yeung that he edged 11 – 9 in the fifth. However, Mapledene cruised to a 6 – 3 win. Lin Roff’s maximum gave her the POM award, whilst Andy Seaman added two more and Charles one,

Despite, at last, fielding a full team this week for the first time in a couple of weeks, the juniors from Rawreth D were taught a sharp lesson by one of the division’s form teams, Hockley B. The Rawreth team of Max Samuels, Harrison Creek and Amber Sturgeon all struggled against the Hockley B home team of Stuart Adshead, Keith Abbott and Dave Colwill. The result was a comfortable 9 – 0 home win.

A close match between Brand Identity B and Hadleigh Forum Bended in a 5 – 4 home win for Brand Identity. Barrie Delf was again player of the match for the hosts, winning all his contests. Barrie was ably assisted with two wins from Adam Jackman. Forum’s successes were spread across the team. Mick Tappenden won two and Dave Woolmer and Tony Jacks one each.

Canvey A were far too strong for hoists Invicta A. Peter Cray put in an unbeaten POM performance and Terry Giddens and Ray Wilson got two each in a 7 – 2 success. Tony Ayliffe was again Invicta’s star with two scalps.

Lentern B took advantage of home side Stanford Le Hope A’sweakened team to record an 8 – 1 victory. Ian Cranstone was Lentern’s star, winning the POM award for his hat trick, whilst Paul Sims wasn’t far behind with three wins too. Wayne Farmer added two more. It was left to established player Peter Weatherall to capture the consolation for Stanford.

With Sidney Dorn making up the compliment for AshingdonHockley C knew they were in for a tougher than expected visit. Sidney duly recorded a POM maximum. However, two wins each from veteran Paul Strutt and Joerg Poeschus, plus one from Brian Bissenden were enough to give Hockley a 5 – 4 away victory. Evie Knaapen did well to overcome Brian for the home team’s other success.

DIVISION 2

Six games this week in Division 2 and three of them finished 9-0 the winners, not surprisingly, being the top three teams in the division RESSC, Stanford B and Canvey B.

RESSC kicked off the week overpowering Stanford C with no game going beyond four sets. Richard Gill came away with the perfect hat trick alongside Mike Worship and Bob Skews.

Next up were Stanford B against Invicta C with Robert Salvage taking the honours with a perfect hat trick backed up by Vaughan Chambers and Chris Crooks. Brendan Raja almost grabbed a consolation point for Invicta leading 2-1 against Vaughan but the Stanford man literally edged home winning the last two sets 11/9 13/11.

Finally Canvey B overcame clubmates Canvey C with POTM Daniel Kellard, Lee McGonagle and Tony Westwell giving little away. Jo Hills did best for the C team extending Lee to five sets. Daniel currently sits top of the averages in the division with a perfect 100%.

Brand Identity C sit fourth in the table after beating Hockley E 7-2 but they were slightly fortunate with Hockley being reduced to two players. Ron Rogerson, playing his first game of this half of the season took an unfortunate fall in his second game and was unable to continue. The score was 3-2 to Brand at that stage but they romped away after that with Richard Reibold taking the POTM honours. Four games went to five sets on the night Dave Cross and Tony Molisso beat Andy Roff and Ross Letham respectively whilst Richard was fully extended by Ron and Tony. Ron has recovered well albeit with a few bruises.

Wakering were also 7-2 winners against Hadleigh Forum D Zac and Paul England recording maximums and Pete Sarfras getting the other point. David Thomas and Tony Mace got Forum’s points.

Finally, Invicta B beat Stanford D 6-3 Steve Lennox with a hat trick, a brace for Sarah Ball and one for Mike Keeble. Mark Downey got two for Stanford with Andrew Jessop getting the other although he almost made it two but conceded a 2-1 lead to Sarah to lose in five sets.
