Week 1 Reports

Premier Division

So after a summer that saw the weather and the England football team surpass our expectations it was back to Table Tennis and week one in this year’s Southend & District Premier Division. Based on the last couple of seasons we are expecting a very competitive division which will go down to the wire both the championship and relegation battles.  A team with the former on their minds are our current Champions Thorpe Bay A and in their 8-1 win over Rayleigh Mill they showed that they will be the team to beat this year and will not be letting their title go without a fight. John Poysden and Alex Abbott went unbeaten while Paul Whatton won two matches going down 9 in the 5th to the Millers’ Duncan Taylor who had three 9 or deuce in the 5th games on the night (phew!! – Ed).

Thorpe Bay A’s closest challengers last season also had strong starts to the 18/19 campaign as Rawreth A and Hullbridge A recorded 9-0 and 8-1 wins over Stanford le Hope A and Hadleigh Forum A respectively. A good win for Neil Barker over Dave Bowles for the consolation for the Forum.  Thorpe Bay B made it wins for both ‘Bay’ sides as they beat Hockley A 6-3 with Liam Squirrel the only man unbeaten. There were good wins for all three Hockley players Tim Pang, Matt Stringer and Chris Ballard as they all picked up one game each.

There were mixed fortunes for the two Warehouse teams with the B team impressing in their Premier Division debut as they beat Brand Identify 7-2, new signing Simon Rudland winning three while brother Mark and Harry Small both had good wins over Barrie Delf and Simon Jacob. The Warehouse A team weren’t so successful in week one as they went down 6-3 to Hullbridge B. The three Warehouse players won one game each but no-one could get the better of man of the match Keith Adams.

And finally, after a number of hard fought matches Hullbridge C emerged the deserving winners 6-3 over Rawreth B. The Rawreth Vets of Eric Green, Mike Hayes & Tim Cramphorn all beat young Daniel Young although the matches were close. Daniel's father, Gary, exacted revenge for his son in winning his 3 although again these were tight matches. However the MoM award must go to another youngster, Harry Keys. He played exceptionally well in beating his much more experienced opponents although again 2 of these matches went to 5 sets. Good luck to everyone in the season ahead.

2nd Division

Just one week into the new season, and already a couple of teams have signaled their intentions for the coming campaign.

Firstly, fielding two players from last year’s Division 1, Stanford Le hope B walloped Rawreth F 9 – 0 away. POM Chris Crooks, Russell Bright and Adrian Armstrong between them only dropped two sets all night.

In a similar vein, Hadleigh Forum B fielded players with recent experience of a higher standard and overcame Hullbridge F’s juniors 9 – 0 at home. Again POM Paul Fawell, Mark Everard and Anthon Ranjit-Singh only conceded two sets all night.

Wakering proved too strong on their visit to newly-promoted Brand Identity C, winning 7 - 2. Stewart Mills and Paul England scored maximums, whilst John Beddow and Richard Riebold won one each.

Invicta B also recorded a 7 – 2 win – at home to Runnymede. Neil Daines won all his three, whilst Mike Keeble and Andy Humphris assisted with two each. Barbara Shead was the visitors’ star winning two rubbers.

Warehouse C gave a real team performance when they went to Rawreth E. Tamas Mezo, Saurabh Mohal and Jonathan Allen each winning two. Stalwart Jan Thorpe got two of his sides points in a 6 -3 defeat, with Bradley Nunn taking the other one.

Despite only fielding two players, Hockley D proved just too strong when hosting Rawreth G. David Chenery was POM, scoring a maximum, whilst Brian Bissenden ensured Hockley got over the winning line with two wins. Jodie Robertson was Rawreth’s best player capturing two wins, whilst there was one each for Andy Deadman and Alice Cole.

3rd Division

The opening week of the season and apart from one 9-0 no show every match finished either 6-3 or 5-4 which could indicate we are in for a very close and exciting season.

The youngsters of Rawreth H certainly started on the right foot winning the final match of the evening against Hockley E to clinch a thrilling 5-4 victory. The result seems to indicate there has been substantial improvement in their play beating a fairly experienced side in Hockley. Charlie Kauders-Boothby and Emily Kidd both won two with one for Rob Bates. Decisive match of the night was probably Emily’s five set win against Ben Cook which brought the scores level at 4-4 leaving the way for Charlie to beat Kevin Blythe to clinch the match. Ben won two for Hockley and there was one each for Kevin and Jason Stringer.

A good start to the season to for Customs B with Richard Kidd getting an impressive hat trick against the veterans of Hullbridge G not losing a set. Dean Johnson provided the other three points whilst Sue Reece, Bob Shingleton-Smith and Ann Lane all got a point for Hullbridge.

Hockley G found it hard going against Stanford D apart from Paul Henlen who got all three points as they went down 6-3. Vaughan Chambers, Mark Farley and Tony Papasifakis all won two each.

More youngsters impressing with a win were Hullbridge H who just eased past the experienced Invicta C team 5-4 thanks to a decisive last match win by Josh Jones who clinched his hat trick in defeating John Golding. Two wins for Joey Page made up the points for Hullbridge whilst John Golding claimed two, and Chris Gregory and Dave Youngman one each for Invicta.

Hockley F, like the G team also lost 6-3, having no answer to Max Russell and Mark Downey of Stanford C who won three each although it was a difficult night for young Bradley Bond who lost to Hermann Maier, Graham Gregory and Kevin Blythe.

Canvey B had a long journey to find there was no opposition at Rochford and have duly claimed the points.
