Week 6 Reports
Premier Division
Before I get onto week 6 a couple of tight matches left over from last week to report on. The first saw Rawreth B's first win of the season with them just edging a tight match 5-4 against Warehouse Bluehouse A. The home team’s Bruce Kettle (pictured) picked up 2 valuable wins but it was the B team’s ‘youngster’, Matt Spero, who shows no signs of slowing down picking up the MoM award by winning his 3 against Kim Shead, Micky Baker and Martin Turner. The second, another 5-4 win, this time for Hullbridge C over Hadleigh Forum A. Daniel Young continues to impress as he took all three of his singles over the vastly more experience trio of Anton Ranjit-Singh, Dave Bassett and Hamish Innes. Young was supported ably by Adam Jackman and Reece Harris-Griffiths both of whom secured one victory each.
So onto week 6 and two more closely fought 5-4 victories. This time Hullbridge C were on the wrong end of the result as they went down by the finest of margins to Thorpe Bay B. Liam Squirrel with a hattrick and Gurj Bhambra with two in this one while there was a good win for Dan Zeffie over Bhambra for Hullbridge. There was success for the Hullbridge A team though as they beat Rayleigh Mill 5-4. Duncan Taylor with three for the Millers alongside a good 12-10 in the 5th win for Colin Chatfield over Richard Brown.
Two 8-1 scorelines next with Thorpe Bay A and Hullbridge B recording convincing wins over Rawreth B and Hockley A respectively. The two consolation victories worth a mention though as Babul McLeod got the better of Paul Whatton and Ian Wall beat Debby Auvache.
The final game of the week saw the return of a Southend legend as Steve Tilson made a comeback in Rawreth A’s 9-0 demolition of Hadleigh Forum A. Supported by maximums from Lee Prentice and Kevin Read, Tilson lost his first end of the night to Hamish Innes but then didn’t look back as won that one 3-1 and his remaining two games 3-0.
Division 1
Hockley B have extended their lead despite losing 5-4 to a Lin Roff inspired Hullbridge D this week, but have played a game more than their chasing rivals. Lin took all three games including a spirited fightback from 2-1 down against Dave Colwill, inflicting only his second loss all season, to take a maximum for Hullbridge. Bill Smith and Mike Johnston took a game each against Josh Copeland to bring the overall victory to Hullbridge leaving them close to the top. Alex Barnetson and Dave Colwill took two each for the Hockley points.
Lentern A meanwhile look comfortable in 3rd and won 6-3 over Canvey A this week. A good all round team performance saw Martin Archie, Steve Barker and Peter Cranmer all score two points, whilst the man of the match was Andrew Murray for Canvey taking all 3 points and providing stiff resistance to the Lentern team. Unusually, Ray Wilson and Peter Cray were unable to influence the score.
Customs A picked up some welcome points with a 6-3 win over Hockley C to end a run of two losing games. Roy Thomas was the mainstay of the win with a hat trick, with man-mountain, Dale Gutteridge chipping in with two and Brian Rackham one. Dan Patynski played well to get two points for Hockley, with Joe Locke picking up the final point.
Hullbridge E had a good win over Rawreth C by 6-3 thanks again to a good team effort. Ben Matthews, Harrison Sadler and Will Skelt all scored two wins for Hullbridge, but came up against stubborn resistance in Trevor Ward who scored all three points for Rawreth in a POTM performance. Unfortunately, Gary McCarthy and John Blackman were unable to emulate this performance.
Invicta A continued their improvement with a noticeable 8-1 victory over Rawreth D. Steve Marr and Mike Piper were once again the stars of the team winning all their games on the night and were backed up by Tony Ayliffe with two wins. Sam Thompson scored the consolation for Rawreth.
Finally, in a clash near the bottom of the table honours almost came out even with a close 5-4 win for Lentern B over RESSC. Gus Heath starred for the Lentern side taking all 3 games with Wayne Farmer and Peter Lucraft adding one each. For RESSC, Mike Worship was the main points winner taking two games, with Ron Coutts and Kevin Smart taking one each, giving both teams some much-needed points.
Barrie Delf
Division 2
Runnymede again called upon their experienced players for Wakering’s visit. POM Dmitri Kisil was unbeaten, whilst veteran Tony Coeshall contributed the other two, in a 5 – 4 home win. A special mention should go to the visitor’s Paul England for getting two wins, whist Nigel Cook and Zac England gained one each.
Canvey B had to resort to an injection of talent from their lower division teams for their match at home to Rawreth G. It had a positive effect though, with Canvey coming out 6 – 3 winners. Regular Talbot Wiseman led the way with a hat trick, with Steve Robinson adding two wins and Geoff Banthorpe one more. Young George Davis was Rawreth’s star with two wins with Andy Deadman adding their last point.
High-flying Hadleigh Forum C gave their young visitors Rawreth F a table tennis master class. There were hat tricks for Tony Mace, Mark Everard and Graham Farmer in a one-sided 9 – 0 win.
The match between Warehouse C and Brand Identity C was a much closer affair, the home side emerging 5 – 4 winners. Jonathan Allen put in a POM performance, winning all his games and Tamas Mezo contributing two. Kelly Yuenyongpknan got two for the visitors and Richard Riebold and Jenne Siebolt one.
Another close-fought match was that between Hullbridge F and Hockley D. Toby Zeffie was POM, winning all his three contests as his Hullbridge side edged it 5 – 4. Joe Buscombe got their other two victories. Roger Sherman, playing up for Hockley, was their best performer, winning two, with Gary Linzell and Brian Bissenden gaining one each.
Experienced Chris Nunn starred in Rawreth E’s 6 – 3 home win over Canvey C. Jan Thorpe added two and Bradley Nunn one. Canvey’s points were evenly spread, on apiece, between Joanna Hills, Ryan Williams and Tony Molisso.
