Week 3 Reports
Premier Division
It was a tough night for Rawreth B as they were only able to field 2 players against Rayleigh Mill with the rest of the squad either injured or on holiday. The final score was 2-7 with the Millers eventually running out deserved winners. Peter Radford was the M0M winning his 2 matches against Bruce Kettle and Babul McLeod both 3 straight. Sam Lowman also picked up a brace but only just getting the better of Babul 12-10 in the 5th.
Elsewhere Hullbridge B were too strong for Stanford le Hope A, Debbie Auvache and Norbert Fullerton were unbeaten on the night although Arron Chandler took Debbie to 5 only losing 10:12 in the final set. Chandler was set to notch his first premier win though as he and Adrian Armstrong, playing up for the home team, both managed to get the better of Paul Churn.
Yet another 7-2 score line came as Hadleigh Forum A went down to Thorpe Bay B. Dave Bassett and Paul Fawell picking up good wins against Gurj Bhambra and Liam Squirrel for the two Forum points.
There were mixed fortunes for what some are calling the Big Three in that there were comprehensive wins for Thorpe Bay A and Hullbridge A against Warehouse A and Warehouse B respectively while Rawreth A could only manage a 5-4 win over Brand Identity A. Rawreth not helped by only being able to field two players with the only actual win on the night for Brand Identity coming from Simon Jacob over Charles Sweeney. Minda Sinkus undefeated for the winning side.
In the final game of the week Hockley A beat Hullbridge C 5-4 mainly thanks to a hattrick by Chris Ballard as he picked up wins against Gary Young, Harry Keys and Daniel Zeffie.
Duncan Taylor DRS Premier Division
1st Division
Hadleigh Forum B continue to be the pacemakers in the division with their third win of the campaign. A strong team performance provided a 7-2 win over Hullbridge D. John Tendler was once again POTM and maintained his 100% record, dropping only one set, and seems to be enjoying life down in Division 1.
Dave Woolmer and Mick Tappenden added two each for the Forum team losing out to Hullbridge’s Charles Yeung and Rod Maclennan respectively. Bill Smith returned to his support role but was unable to trick anyone into losing this week.
Lentern A are close on the heels of Hadleigh only one point behind, winning their 3rd game too. They proved too strong for Invicta A, winning by the same margin 7-2, although there were 4 close 5-setters that could have gone either way. Elaine Sayer and Peter Cranmer proved too hot to handle for the Invicta boys taking maximums each, supported by one from Martin Archie. Both Michael Piper and Tony Ayliffe scored consolation wins over Martin, with captain, Steve Marr unable to add to the score this week.
A further point back are Hockley B, who put up a good team performance winning 6-3 over experienced Canvey A. The scoring was led by Chris Ballard, winning all three, only dropping one set, and now a permanent B player having won 7 games playing up already in the month of September. Alex Barnetson added two and Dan Patynski the final point for the Hockley team. For Canvey, Ray Wilson, Andrew Murray and Terry Giddens all scored a point each with the highlight probably a good 5 set win (12-10 in the 5th) for Andrew over Alex Barnetson, having been 2-1 down.
Brand Identity B returned to winning ways with a hard fought 5-4 win over the youngsters from Hullbridge E. David Jacob was the star performer, unbeaten on the night, supported by a point each for Mick Grout and Sean McNabb. For Hullbridge James Goddard and Will Skelt scored two each, to make up the Hullbridge tally. Will playing particularly well to snatch both of his games in 5 sets. Harrison Sadler was unable to make any impression on the Brand team.
Rawreth C moved up the table with their first win of the campaign, scoring a convincing 8-1 win over RESSC, who are still looking for their first win of the season. Garry Hartgrove and Trevor Ward scored maximum points for Rawreth, with Colin Clements adding two, the only blemish a 5 set win for grizzled campaigner, Mike Worship, playing in his first game this year (12-10 in the 5th and coming back from 2-0 down) against Colin. Other games were close too, but Rawreth proved too strong for RESSC.
Hockley C posted a strong 7-2 win over Rawreth D with Chris Ballard posting his second maximum in the week. Dan Patynski and Keith Abbott scored two each to add to the score but neither were able to get the better of Rawreth’s Sam Thompson, who got both consolation points. Neither Caroline Cole nor Olivia Jones were able to get close to the opposition, but Hockley C will now be without Chris who will be playing up for the rest of the season having won his 7 games.
Barry Delf DRS Division 1
2nd Division
A good team performance from Runnymede this week gave them their first away victory of the season at Rawreth F. Two wins each from POM Anne Adlington and Barry Edgar was backed up by a single victory from Jim Nariel to give them a 5 - 4 win. For the home side Keanan Ford also had two wins, whilst Noah Unstead and Jack Himpfen-Jones contributed one each.
A Jo Hills hat trick helped Canvey C to their first win of the season – a comfortable 7 – 2 home triumph over Warehouse C. Steve Robinson and Tony Molisso added two each for Canvey, whilst Saurabh Mohal deserves a special mention for getting both the visitors’ points.
Wakering were far too strong for visitors Rawreth G. Maximums from both Zac England and Stewart Mills ensured an 8 - 1 victory, with Robert Wood being responsible for Rawreth’s only success.
Two maximums each from Invicta B’s Neil Daines and Andy Humphris gave their side a 6 – 3 home win over Hullbridge F. The visitors’ Toby Zeffie, Ben Hoskins and Joe Buscombe gave a very good account of themselves and, on this showing, as the season progresses, they will do very well.
Hadleigh Forum C put out a strong team again for their fixture at Rawreth E this week. Anthon Ranjit-Singh and POM Mark Everard barely broke into a sweat in winning maximums in their 6 – 3 victory. The home side’s Ken Field, Jan Thorpe and Bradley Nunn each had one success.
An Adrian Armstrong hat trick, together with one each from the Handscombe family representatives (Peter and John) led to Stanford Le Hope B edging their match away to Brand Identity C 5 – 4. Richard Riebold starred for the home side with two wins.
Another all-round team performance led again to a 5 – 4 away victory; this time for Canvey B at Hockley D. There were two wins apiece for Talbot Wiseman and Des Duffield, with Stuart Curran, playing up from Canvey C, adding a single success. POM Dave Chenery was very unfortunate to end up on the losing side after winning all his matches.
David Barnes DRS Division 2
3rd Division
Canvey D moved back to the top of the table with a thumping 8-1 win against Warehouse D. Geoff Banthorpe and Ray Baker both got maximums with Steve Parker winning two. Steve Higgins did best for Warehouse beating Steve and taking Ray to five sets otherwise it was a fairly straightforward win for the Islanders.
Hullbridge G moved into second place with a 6-3 win at Stanford C. Sue Reece was in fine form to record her second hat trick of the season and she was backed up by new signing Andy Roff with a brace and one from Bob Shingleton-Smith. Mark Downey won two for Stanford and there was just one win for young Max Russell who suffered his first defeats of the season. The opposition proved too strong for youngster Bradley Bond.
In the first Hockley derby of the season Hockley G brought out the big guns to face their F team and won 6-3. Alan Tideswell, returning to league action after an eye operation, won his three alongside fellow vet Paul Henlen but youngster Oliver George just could not find the way to get a win. He lost in four sets to Graham Gregory then 11-8 in the fifth to Alwine Jarvis and 11-7 in the fifth to Roger Sherman. Paul took the man of the match title not dropping a set.
The young Rawreth H team are not going to be a walkover this season already picking up their second win, a narrow 5-4 victory against Customs B. Star of the evening was Emily Kidd who won all her games including a four set win against her Dad, Richard and she also clinched the match defeating Alex Clark in four sets in the last game of the evening. Charlie Kauders-Boothby got the other point for Rawreth whilst Richard got two wins for Customs along with Dean Johnson.
A topsy turvy game between Hullbridge H and Stanford D saw Hullbridge go 1-0 up before then losing the next six games before rallying to win the last two. Dan Harris took the man of the match honours with three wins supported by Tony Papasifakis with two and a first league win for Mandy Till. Josh Jones won two for Hullbridge including a five set win against Tony after being two sets down, whilst Joey Page got their other point. This result leaves the Stanford D and C teams exactly level in fourth place.
· Rochford LTC were unable to field a side for the third week running. Sadly, after much thought, Rochford have decided to withdraw from the League and their Fixtures for the Season are expunged
