SDTTL Summer League 2014

Week 5 Report

In Division 1 of the Southend Summer a strong Sandpaper boys team had a 7-2 victory over Warehouse “A”, although Martin West would have been pleased with his singles win over Glen Johnson. There was a good team effort from, Lyn Attridge, Bill Smith and Andy Seaman of Hullbridge “C” in their 5-4 victory over Kingswood “A”, which had Gus Heath unbeaten in his singles. Although they did not fare so well when they played league leaders Lentern losing 8-1, the one they won was a good three straight victory for Maxine Abbott over the hard hitting John Cleasby. Charles Sweeny making his debut for Hullbridge “A” remained unbeaten in leading them to a good victory over Castle Point “A”, although victory was only secured in the final set of the final game of the evening with a net and an edge !!.

In Division 2 there was a good game between Invicta “A” and Warehouse “B”, which was won 6-3 by Invicta. Two Invicta players, Michael Piper and Neil Daines had both won all of their previous games only to lose in the final doubles of the evening to Phil Puckey and Graham Back in the fifth end to deny them 100% wins on the night. Canvey “A” remain bottom after losing to Kingswood “B” 6-3, who had Peter Lucraft unbeaten on the night, although Peter Cray won both of his singles for Canvey. They also lost to Hockley “A” 6-3 in a game where Dennis Squirell remained unbeaten for the village team. Another unbeaten player was Dave Woolmer of 2nd placed Hadleigh Forum in his team’s 6-3 victory over Kingswood “B”.

Division 3 leaders Runnymede just managed to keep their 100% winning record and it was a good win in the final doubles by Barry Edgar and Nathan Ram over the RESSC pairing of Gordon Swan and Ron Coutts that enabled them to win 5-4. They also had a close game in their 6-3 victory over Castle Point “B”, in a game where no one remained unbeaten. Another game where no player was unbeaten was the game between RESSC and Hullbridge “D”, which was won by Hullbridge 5-4. Martin Roberts had an unbeaten performance in leading Castle Point “B” to a 6-3 victory over Hullbridge “E”, although he was given a fright by young Zoe Davies, just beating her 12-10 in the fifth set.
Castle Point “C” have moved off the bottom of Division 4, thanks to an unbeaten performance from John Beddow in his team’s 7-2 victory over Hockley “C”, who had Stuart Adshead winning both of his singles. Warehouse “C” have moved into 2nd place after a close 5-4 victory over Hockley “C”.
