Southend & District Table Tennis League

Winter League 2013-14 Season

Week 17 - Commencing 13th January 2014

Premier Division

With a 9-0 win over Hadleigh Forum defending champions Rawreth A made ground on their two closest rivals Thorpe Bay A and Runnymede A who could only register 6-3 wins over Lentern A and Rawreth B respectively. It could have been worse for Thorpe Bay A had they not won the two games that were settled late in a 5th end.
Week 14 also saw the first win of the season for Hullbridge B in a closely contested game with 5 out of 9 going the distance against Rawreth C . Sid Dorn can consider himself very unlucky only to win 1 after all his games went the distance.
A hattrick for Duncan Taylor and a win for Steve Maltby over Nigel Lamb saw a two man Rayleigh Mill take Hullbridge to the last game of the evening. But with the score at 4-4 it was Glen Johnson that edged out ‘magic man’ Maltby in 5 close sets.

A Peter Saunders hat trick helped Hullbridge B to a 7-2 victory over Lentern E. Andy Seaman and Maxine Abbot contributed with two wins each, but were unable to get the better of Lentern's 2 game winner Brian Spencer. Lentern B just edged a 5-4 win over Thorpe Bay C, despite a good hat trick from former Southend no. 1 John Blackman. John Lott and Malcolm Henstock won 2 games a piece for Lentern B. The Lentern C team had a good win over Hadleigh Forum C with Les Taylor in great form winning his three matches. Les was supported by Mike Grout and Wayne Farmer who won two games weach respectively.

Division 2

Phil Digby continued his unbeaten run, winning all three at home to Canvey C. However, it was not enough to stop Canvey winning 5 – 4. Two each from Geoff Banthorpe and Lee McGonagle, together with one from Gordon Johnstone, sealed the result.

A fine maximum from Tarun Goel gave Warehouse C the edge away to Hockley C. One win each from Jonathan Allen and Gordon Child gave the visitors a 5 – 4 win. Dennis Squirrall and Paul Henlen won two each for Hockley.
Richard Riebold was also in good form for Castle Point C, winning all three of his games in his side’s 6 – 3 win at home to Hullbridge E. He was well supported by John Beddow (2) and David Humphreys (1). Dave Booroff scored two for the visitors.
There was also a maximum for Paul Ogden in Hullbridge D’s win at home to Castle Point B.  Two wins for Bob Shingleton-Smith ensured a 5 – 4 win. Martin Roberts managed two for the visitors.
Neil Daines also turned in an undefeated performance as Invicta A won 6 -3 away to Rawreth D. David Barnes won two for Invicta, whilst Jan Thorpe got two of the home side’s three wins.

Division 3

The two top teams both carried on their winning ways this week. Wakering recording a  9-0 win against Rawreth E, who were unable to field a team due to circumstances and Invicta B who beat Hullbridge G by the same scoreline. Unbeaten for Invicta were John Golding, Mike Keeble and Sam Verrinder. Rawreth Juniors A maintained their good record with a close 5-4 win at Canvey D, thanks to another hattrick from Andy Deadman and two from Justin Jeffery, Ray Baker putting up some resistance for the home team with two wins. No more results were received this week.
