SOUTH DEVON & TORBAY TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE – SPONSORED BY ALBANY FLORISTS

2023-24 SEASON

It’s been a very quiet week for most teams this week with a break from league competition as the first round of the Team Singles Handicap Cup got underway.  With a number of postponements and several first round byes only 3 cup matches took place together with one rearranged league fixture.

Dawlish Doubtfuls, going well in the fourth division, defeated third division Taverners 19-17 in an exciting encounter which could’ve gone either way. The scores were level with 2 two sets to play when Nick Pook swung the match in Dawlish’s favour with a 4-0 win. Marc Grim then got the necessary one point for victory despite losing 3-1 to man of the match Geoff Read.

In a match of contrasting abilities Torbay Academy 1, current champions of the first division, took on Newton Abbot’s lowest ranked team of beginners and new to the league, NA Vultures. The vast difference in abilities and experience meant the Academy side had to overcome a massive handicap which they failed to do. Unbeaten in the league this season the Academy’s Aarish Maharjan remains unbeaten as he coped with the handicap well. But the Vultures’ James Kitchen, Fin Humphreys and James Gilbert were too steady for the Academy’s Shipley twins, NA Vultures winning 19-9

The final first round cup match pitched two Newton Abbot sides together, first division NA Condors proving too strong for NA Harriers from division three. The Harriers’ Nick Kitchen won the first set 3-1 but that proved to be their only win of the night as the Condors team of Mike Kiff, Bob Parkins and Jim McIvor cruised to victory 24-12.

There was one rearranged league match in the first division which saw NA Parrots pick up their first win of the season with an excellent 9-1 victory over Brixham Sharks. Rhys Lush and Ben Hoare were undefeated for the Parrots and Dan Webster-Hall won two singles just losing out on his maximum 11-9 in the fifth to Christopher Harper who picked up the Shark’s point.
