Northumbria Winter League - weekly league report 26 June 2022

In Division 1 there was an evenly contested game between Old England and Prudhoe which ended in a 5-5 draw. Alan Atkinson and Lynne Herrington both won two games each for Old England and combined to win the doubles. Prudhoe’s wins came from Mark O’Connor and Peter Stempczyk who both won two games each and the fifth came from a John Henderson win over Colin Robson. Cramlington Stingers had a good 8-2 win over Mount B with Oliver Ho and Nigel Rodgers both on form winning their three games and Nigel Rodgers pairing with Anth Doyle to win the doubles. Mount’s points came from Shirley Gelder and Alan Livingstone wins over Anth Doyle.

In Division 2 Durham City Scorpions had a 6-4 win over Cramlington Swifts with Harry Veitch player of the match for the Scorpions winning his three games including a close five end game against Philip Teah-Smith. Oliver Wilkinson won two points with wins over Philip Teah-Smith and Rob Lee; and paired up with Luke Dumighan to win the doubles. Mount C moved into second place and are putting some pressure on league leaders Brandon Anacondas after a 7-3 win over Ouston. Joseph Miller and Gary Anderson both won three games for Mount. Jeff McKenna and Jamie Milroy were able to secure wins against Mount’s Dave Swan and also won the doubles. There was a close game between Tyneside and NECA which ended in a 5-5 draw. NECA had gone into a 5-3 lead thanks to three wins from Jamie Collins and two wins from Will McCallum but then Tyneside win the last two games to secure the draw with Chas Robertson beating Will McCallum, and James Moore beating Terry Kwong in a close five end game.

In Division 3 Brandon Bravehearts had a comfortable 9-1 win against Backspin B which keeps them top of the table. Alex Nicholl won the first game for Backspin against David Brown but then the Brandon team won the next 9 games to secure the victory. Cramlington Tigers had a good 8-2 win against Backspin A which moves them up into third place in the league. Cramlington’s points came from Leo Conn and Jamie Hall who both won their three games and combined to win the doubles. Backspin’s points came from John Cook and Tom Marley who both beat Lynsey Storey.

In Division 4 Cramlington Dragons had a 6-4 win against Backspin C. Pauline Long was player of the match for the Dragon winning three games including a close game with Ken Greatbatch which went to five ends that Pauline won 16-14. Adrian Barnes added two wins against Ken Greatbatch and David Straughair, and Paul Athey one win against David Straughair. Backspin D were awarded a 10-0 as Cramlington Magpies were unable to field a team.
