Northumbria Winter League - weekly league report 19 June 2022

In Division 1 there was a top of the table clash between Cramlington Casuals and St Chads which ended in a 5-5 draw. Keith Weatherby was player of the match for St Chads beating James Bradbury, Oliver Ho and Gareth Pearson. Two wins each for Oliver Ho and James Bradbury against Charlotte Weatherby and Dave Bissett and one win for Gareth Pearson enabled the Casuals to draw the match. Prudhoe proved too strong for Mount B as they won 8-2 with Mark O’Connor and Andrew Firth both winning three games. The points for Mont came from wins by Rob Lawson and Shirley Gelder over Peter Stempczyk. The match between Mount A and Old England ended in a 6-4 win for Mount A thanks to two wins each for Steve Penman, Lee Eadington and Jimmy Scope. Player of the match went to Old England’s Neil Herrington who won three games including a close game against Steve Penman where he won the final two ends to come back from 2-1 down.

In Division 2 top of the table Brandon Anacondas went down to a 7-3 defeat to Tyneside. The Tyneside team of Mark Kimberley, James Robertson and Chas Robertson all won two games each. Second placed Mount C were not able to capitalise on this as they lost 6-4 to Cramlington Swifts, Richard Williamson was again player of the match winning three games. The match had been evenly poised at 4-4 but wins by Philip Teah-Smith over Michael Bradley, and Rob Lee over Gary Anderson secured the win for the Swifts. In another close game Harry Veitch was player of the match for Durham City Scorpions as he won three games against Will McCallum, Ken Lee and Jamie Collins to secure a 6-4 win for Durham City against NECA A.

In Division 3 the match between Backspin A and Stocksfield A was very close and could have gone either way but at 4-4 Stocksfield A won the last two games to win 6-4. Stephen Oxley was player of the match with three wins including a five end game against John Cook that he won 11-9 in the fifth end. In the game between Brandon Fusion and Cramlington Tigers the young Brandon team found themselves 5-2 down after two wins apiece from Cramlington’s Lynsey Storey and Jamie Hall; and a win from Paul Conn. Brandon staged a comeback with wins from Freya Williams over Jamie Hall and Harry Flynn over Paul Conn to take the match to the final end. However, Lynsey Storey beat Sam Li in a close five end game to win the match for Cramlington 6-4.

In Division 4 the first match of the week was between Backspin C and Cramlington Cobras. The Backspin team were up against from the start against top of the table Cobras as they could only field two players and the Cobras proved too strong with an 8-2 win. There was an all-Cramlington match between Cramlington Dynamos and Cramlington Dragons. Despite only having two players the Dynamos came out on top with a 6-4 win with Jonathan Javita-Calle player of the match with three wins. In the final match the Cramlington Panthers team of Nikhil Smith, Jay Smith and Callum French proved too strong for Backspin D securing a 10-0 win.
