Northumbria Winter League - weekly league report 05 June 2022

The bank holidays on Thursday and Friday have caused a number of games to be rescheduled so there are fewer games to cover this week.

In Division 1 the early pacesetters Cramlington Casuals had a convincing 9-1 win over Mount B which kept them in top place. Duncan Wraight and Gareth Pearson proved too strong for the Mount team of Dave Cutler, Karen Henry and Ron Lawson as they both won their three games with Gareth Pearson taking player of the match. Mount’s solitary win came in the final match of the night as Dave Cutler edged out James Bradbury. Second placed St Chads also had a convincing 9-1 win over Old England. Chris Blake was player of the match for St Chads with victories over Old England’s Neil Herrington, Jake Helm and Joe Perrin. The game of the night was a repeat of the recent Northumberland Veterans singles quarter final between Neil Herrington and Keith Weatherby which went to Neil Herrington. In this match Keith Weatherby took a 2-0 lead only to be pulled back to 2-2 as it looked like Neil Herrington might repeat that win but Keith Weatherby won the fifth end to secure the win this time.

There was only one match in Division 2 this week between the top two teams Brandon Anacondas and Mount C. It looked like the Mount team would steal a victory taking a 4-1 lead after singles wins by Dave Cutler and John Rowell; and the pair combining to win the doubles. Brandon pulled the match back to 4-3 before Michael Bradley secured a five-end win over Paul Dale having been 2-0 down to make it 5-3. Jamie Westwater and Ian Richardson won the final two games for Brandon to secure a 5-5 draw.

In Division 3 Brandon Bravehearts and Brandon Fusion were in action against Backspin A and Backspin B respectively. In the match between Backspin A and Brandon Bravehearts Backspin started well with John Cook defeating David Brown in the first game but then Brandon took control winning the next 9 games with Phil Hansom and Paul Dale winning three games each, and David Brown winning two games. In the second match Brandon Fusion beat Backspin B by the same 9-1 score. The young Brandon team of Angelos Gidopoulos, Freya Williams and Sam Bell proved too strong for their opponents with Angelos being player of the match. Backspin’s solitary win came from an Alex Nichol win over Sam Bell.
