Derby victory for Burton C

After 11 matches, Burton A lead Division 1 of the Kendal & District Table Tennis League by 11 points from Natland A. The chase is on however following Natland A’s comfortable 26-8 home victory over Burton C and third placed IBIS’ 25-13 defeat of Dalton A. It looks like the title won’t be decided until the final week of the season. The match of the week was a re-arranged derby match between two relegation threatened teams, Burton B and Burton C. Burton C ran out narrow winners by 19 points to 18 despite a hat-trick of victories for Dennis Hooley who came from 2-0 down to narrowly defeat Tony March 11-5 in the fifth in a hard fought encounter. The match wasn’t decided until the final game of the night, when at 2-2 in the doubles, Martin Wakelin and Tony March scraped past Dennis Hooley and Shelley Rhodes by 11 points to 9. The result moved Burton C out of the relegation places but left Burton B firmly rooted to the bottom of the table. Despite a 22-16 win against Burton B, Natland B have fallen back into the second relegation position.

In Division 2, unbeaten Crook B continue their relentless march towards the title. Matches of the week included Natland E’s unexpected 21-19 victory over Crook C, with Samuel Medhurst producing a man of the match performance winning all 3 of his singles matches. Equally hard fought was Grayrigg A’s 19-17 defeat of Crook D. Sam Housego was the star of the show with 3 singles wins and a nerve tingling 11-9 11-4 3-11 11-13 11-9 win in the doubles in partnership with Steve Hawley.
